Pfff when I see this it looks close, but if you look at the aircraft types you can see the difference.
The DHL looks to me its a B737 and the JAL like a A330

But stil this is not normal to me

Sorry nozem but JAL hasn't A330's on the fleet. As far as I remember JAL never had any Airbus on the fleet. But it's quite easy to understand the confusion. When we use lots of glass to photograph sometimes things look very different, and in fact that was what it made aircrafts look closer than in fact they are.
There is something called TCAS in other words the Traffic Collision Avoidance System which means that both pilots would have been warned by the equipment if something wrong was happening, not to mention of course the ATC which was monitoring all the situation.( you can read more about the TCAS following the link http://www.aerowinx.de/html/tcas.html )
Neverthless, that was a unique photo opportunity, and to those that don't know much about aviation, perhaps a big scare.

Yes you're right about the A330's and only JAL domestic has som A300's flying around....
I could have know that, looking in the database....

And about that TCAS
I can remember me a air to air collision above Switserland that the TCAS and the ATC said something different and that made them collide(a rusian TU154 and a A300 from DHL).

but stil with the technology from nowadays they can come close to eachother and still having a save distance allthough some people can see it like it was indeed very close....

Judging by the looks of the JAL aircraft it appears to be a 777-300ER because they have raked wingtips compared to other models of 777's .

The official line was that they were the required 1,000 feet apart, but as the photograph was taken from below it gives the impression that they were very close.

Had read about this at another airliner forum. The planes were not that close. It's the camera angle wich causes the illusion. airbuseric is right about the planes involved. Think that the journalist wanted to create a sensational news......................
