I often wonder how does the French gov't+people feel when AF has been investing so massively in 777s instead of A340s. Some amazing facts:
- AF is the launch customer of 77W and 77F programs
- AF is operating 25 772ERs+25 77Ws and has orders+options for 26 more 77Ws+77Fs...Overtaken BA to become the biggest 777 operator in EU and may soon be 1 of the top 3 in the world behind EK and SQ....all excluding those KLM 777s.
- AF never ordered any 345/346(Both are struggling in sales) and 332F
- French gov't still owns 20% shares in AF-KLM
- Toulouse(Airbus HQ) is only 600km fm CDG(AF-KLM HQ) in the same country
Amazingly, there seems to be little or no public outcry nor pressure in France so far.
An interesting irony:
If a huge French enterprise(i.e. AF) with gov't influence can choose an U.S. import over their domestic aerospace product(i.e. Airbus), what's wrong with the USAF choosing a French import(i.e. A332 MRTT) over their domestic aerospace product(i.e. Boeing)?
Globalization triumph over nationalism......

I think it is extremely healthy that they aren't bound to buying their local Toulousian products. The Seattle alternative obviously suits their business model better and it is great to see them not being as bound to Toulouse as a few of the American carriers are to Seattle!

Yes I agree and I can remember way back in the late 60s when AA and Brannif ordered the BAC1/11 there was an outcry among some of the US commentators that these airlines should be supporting the US industry rather than the UK. But conversely you will remember how BOAC were forced to buy the VC-10 when they wanted more 707s and BEA were forced to buy Trident 3B when they wanted 727-200 and how this set these airlines back financially.
777 is a really good all round airliner offering range, power, low maintenance and low operating costs where the A-340 although a really good airliner is just a bit expensive to operate due to the four big gas guzzling engines.

This makes perfect sense.. it is obvious that the 777 fits the AF business model, as it does a large number of airlines right now. They are buying the A380 again this fits the business model. and the have 340-300's which at the time fit the business model. It is all business not politics
What everyone sems to forget about the new KC tanker is that only the airframe is from Toulouse. It will be outfitted in the states by american workers employed by american companies. The only concern is that Boeing did not get the contract being american. Given the current track record of boeing military transports, 3 of 4 broken C17s down in canada, I think this makes sense to go with eads given the a33x availability in airline use. I know the 767 is a good airframe and has good reliability as well, but this is the military. Time will tell

Now that AF is doing well on its new LHR-Los Angeles Open Skies route with 777s, it may need extra aircraft fot more Open Skies routes not previously planned for.
Good on the French people and government for not putting pressure on the carrier to purchase aircraft it does not wish. As captain bill noted above, this is not always the case elsewhere.

Yes, 20-30yrs ago before the days of globalization, if a country is an airliner producer, its national airlines are nearly obligated to purchase domestic products instead of imported equivalents.
Nowadays, the very term of <domestic airliner> is in itself questionable. Majority of the content(Including R&D) on the latest Airbus or Boeing products are fm countries outside France and the U.S. respectively.
