Unusual for sure. CLE & PHX for NW are:
- not maintenance bases
- not inter-continental service points
- not even focus cities for NW and the biggest NW aircraft flying them is typically a DC9
The only scheduled domestic routes for NW's 333 are HNL-SEA/MSP and their A330 fleet has got pretty high utilization rate. There must hv been huge efforts by NW to make this charter happened. I can only think of a few reasons to make this worthwhile for both parties:
1. Unusally large # of VIPs, media, sponsors, management, etc. traveling along with the team. NW's 333 has nearly 300 seats.
2. If there was a large media traveling, NW want's to use the opportunity to showcase the New WBC(World Biz Class) and Y-class onboard. Among U.S. carriers, lie-flat seats and AVOD in every seat are still unusual even for longhaul.
3. The team must be really tired and needed an unusually good rest inflight that is only available thur lie-flat seat. None of the DL763,UA763,CO753 and NW752, even in Int'l configuration, currently hv this feature.

It is extremely unusual to have such big plane (A330) for sports charter. May be a last minute subsitution. All sports charters I have seen here (YVR) are B737, A320, DC9. B757 in rare occasions.
OT: Spicy Girls used B757 not Virgin Atlantic's B744 Spicy Jets as roumoured.

It seems to be unusual for teams except those in the NFL. I think that Skid Kid is onto something. The NFL is one of the highest grossing leagues in the US and the same is true for individual teams. Maybe they want more of the team to be able to have first or biz class seats in addition to what FLX said.
