BMI baby fleet...

My dad thinks we are going on a small plane because we are only flying from Birmingham to Aberdeen, but I've checked on here that the bmi baby fleet is only 737's. I don't wanna fly on a tiny plane, I'd be embarrassed to exit one!

i was in Aberdeen in May and the Birmingham flight i saw was a BMI
Baby 737.

There may also be the B717 or MD80 flying around. As well as another completely unforseen aircraft. But seriously i think your right on the money with that answer G-NIKO.

Why would you not want to fly on a  tiny  plane milkee ?

What do you regard as a tiny plane ? An Airfix model or something similar !!!

I fly a lot on smaller types and enjoy every minute of it so I recomend you try it sometime and see what real flying is all about.

O and by the way all let's not start an agument about which is better Boeing or Airbus. We love 'em all

Don't know really I like a larger plane to stretch my legs in I suppose lol. BTW Boeing and airbus are pretty similar, I was once on an easyjet and couldn't tell.

Actually, without the 737, I venture to say that there would probably be no A32X family....at least not in the form we know today.

737 family was born about 20 yrs before A32X family. It was born mostly because Boeing bet on whether a large mkt segment would exist in the future for a 110-120 seat short-range twin jet that would hv significantly better economics than BAC-111, 727-100 or even the smaller F28. In contrast, there was probably only 1 primary reason why the A32X family exist: To fight 737(Or more precisely, break Boeing's monopoly in this segment where Boeing has bet on 20 yrs ago and won BIG TIME). I hv no way to prove this but I'd be surprised if Airbus did not use the 737 family as the primary or even the only single benchmark/target in the A32X family's design phase. Remember? the DC9/MD-80 family in the same segment was also pretty popular around that time(Probably 2nd in sales after 737) but Airbus did not follow that format to develop its A32X family......unless U think an A320 look more like a MD82 than a 737-400......if U do, I rest my case.

I agree with captain bill completely. Fm the pax's point of view, smaller jets typically require less time to board/ disembark and offer more frequent/non-stop services. For the airliner enthusiast, it just feels more exciting and more like a fighter jet due to quicker acceleration @ take-off/climb.

If the 737 family is a TINY plane, I suggest we start to refer to all jets in a new scale:
NANO planes: ATR72, Shorts360, Dash8/Q300s, etc.
MICRO planes: Embraer E-jets, Bombardier RJs, etc.
MINI planes: 757, 767, A310, A300
COMPACT planes: A330, A340, 777
SMALL planes: 747, A380
MEDIUM planes: Lockheed C5 Galaxy, Antonov An225
BIG planes: Hughes H-4 Hercules Spruce Goose

Only 1 inconvenient problem: With all the media blitz lately, I find it difficult for most people to accept the A380 as a SMALL plane.

Compare with non-frequent travellers, I find that many frequent flyers seem to be less adverse toward smaller jets. 1st, frequent flyers seem to better understand that smaller jets partially replicate the advantages of the ultimate form of air travel which are the sub-NANO private jets. 2nd, frequent flyers understand that regardless of how big a plane is, size of your own seat in the typically full flights nowadays is the only thing that matters(i.e. Bigger plane does not equal to bigger personal space). Finally, active turbulence effect minimization system on the latest generation small jets can now mimic the smoother ride typically associated with bigger jets. The popular notion of bigger plane = better plane will soon become an ancient myth/outdated concept just like the old idea of a bigger car/computer/camera = better car/computer/camera.

Hey, Airfix or Hasegawa model airliners don't count, ok? I love these models though and I used to buy & build loads of them as a hobby.

I'd love to fly on an A380, never see one in the flesh but seen pictures and looks huge, many wheels for landing on...

Your spot on FLX the  pocket rockets  are fab to fly in but when I was talking about smaller types I was thinking more of the Saab 340, Jetstream 31 and 41, ATR-42 and 72 and Dash-8s that I use regularly.

Loganair Saab 340 in BA colours to the Highland and Islands of Scotland, Jetstream 31s of Highland Air, 41s of Eastern, Dash 8s of FlyBE and the ATRs of Aer Arann are regulars for me and I love them all. It is a diferent way of flying in comparison to the other Medium to Large types that I fly in such as the 737 / Airbus 319/320 or the 757 .

In my early days in the industry when the first wide body style airliners were being developes (747, DC-10 &L-1011) we called them all  JUMBOS  but the term which I hate has only stuck to the 747.

If you love flying like I do you don't mind what type you fly in as long as you know the type well and the carrier both of these are important.

In terms of standing acceleration, big jets like 747 and A388 are big buses/coaches and small jets like 73G and A319 are super-light sports cars!

I remember once I flew on a NW 742 HKG-SEA heavily laden with fuel and @ the range limit of a 742. As we started to roll @ take-off, I saw an airport truck running parallel to us actually over-took us and remained ahead of our jumbo for about 10 secs. That's when I felt a bit frustrated(Perhaps even embarrassed) at how slow we were making progress in a gigantic jet and really hit home the fact that a huge 747 would be no match to a tiny 737 in acceleration. Gosh, those 4 large JT9Ds turbofans were already running @ full throttle and screaming @ the top of their lungs and we still needed the entire runway length to reach VR and V2! Later day 744s are better but still won't give U that serious push in the back feeling U get fm a 73G or A319 @ take-off. Of course, @ cruise speed, it's a totally diff story....

Try a little Saab or Jetstream for that push back in the seat feeling... It' great.

Yes you do wonder how some of those big fellows ever get off the ground.

I have a little friend and he was chief test pilot for Airfix.

I'd love to fly on a 787. Never seen one in the flesh too but only photos. Looks lean & sharp. Much bigger windows than any other airliners for viewing+electronic window shades. Also can't wait to try 787's much more comfortable cabin pressure & humidity than any other airliners.

I used to love flying in a huge plane(e.g. DC-10, L1011, 747) when I was a teenager. I don't wanna fly on a big plane anymore, I'd be frustrated waiting forever to exit one after a 12-13 hrs long-haul and before dragging myself to the immigration queqe that's as long as the Great Wall of China.....may be I'm just getting old.
