has ordered an Airbus A380, the world's biggest airliner, for use as his private jet, a report said Wednesday.

French newspaper Le Figaro, which did not cite sources, said Abramovich was the mystery buyer behind an order for an A380 VIP, which was revealed by Airbus at the Paris Air Show in June this year.

The doubledecker A380, which enters service later this year, is capable of carrying 840 passengers, measures 73 metres in length (239-feet) and towers over its biggest rival, the Boeing 747.

Airbus sales director John Leahy had told AFP about the order in June, saying it would be for use by the buyer  and his entourage.

Well, finally an A380 will offers swimming pool and the others vip things.

I may think the entire Chelsea football team will fly this vip A380 and use the swimming pool and others things.

Is Airbus set a date for this delivery? As spotter i'm interesting...

Im just gonna hazard a guess that it might see the end of P4-MES.

It may also be a pain for many airports since, for example Manchester because Abramovich likes to visit to watch the Chelsea vs Manchester United.

Its poppycock. Were the hell would he keep it. where he lives is close to SOH which cant handle it. BOH which can and would be nice to see. (for you wondering about the size of the taxiways they will use 35/17 to park it on where they park the An124 and other large aircraft. But I see this as just a load of B*llo*. But then again could we could call it the Chelski whale jet.

May be because I'm not a billionnaire, I don't understand the point in using A388 in a VIP role. In the foreseeable future, only 2-3 dozens or so major+busiest airports in the world can handle A388 with proper airfield infrastructure(Not the terminal handling part as VIP transport don't need them). Its utilization will be severely limited.

1. If I'm a multi-billionnaire visiting a major city of the world, say for business or watch the Chelsea play, I still expect most of my flights are planned to suffer little or no delays(Otherwise, why would I buy my own jet?) due to airport traffic congestions both in the air & on the ground. This will typically involve flying to less congested but often smaller alternative airport of a major city. With an A388 VIP, this will be impossible.

2. Beyond these 2-3 dozens A380 compatible airports, I can't use it anywhere else. I can't reach my top-class exotic playgrounds in the world because nearly all tropical or winter resort town airports are off-limits to my A380 VIP. It's just simply too big for where I want to go.

3. Well, I can still use it for point A to point A flying or just parked on the ground and enjoy the onboard swimming pool, tennis court and golf driving range possible only on an A380, right? After all, I hv got a plane bigger than my largest yacht for cruising around! But wait a minute, I hv got much bigger space to do all these in any of my estates/marinas worldwide.

Hmm...an A332 or 788 VIP seems like a more logical investment proposition now.

There are B747-400 business jets so i see no reason why there wont be A380 business jets, but as has been mentioned what will the use be of having one if it is limited to a dozen airports in the world. Maybe he will keep the B767-300ER after all.

744 VIP or 388 VIP doesn't matter. I still can't see the practical value even for a multi-billionaire. I can accept the buying decision based purely on the need for a status symbol though(i.e. Like a huge neon sign advertising that I AM ULTRA RICH & MORE WEALTHY THAN YOU BOTTOM-DWELLING BILLIONAIRES BECAUSE MY JET IS BIGGER THAN YOURS AND CAN AFFORD TO LET IT JUST SIT AROUND FLYING NOWHERE!)

The best vip jets in bigger size is 737BBJ and A319ACJ, more than this is no pratical value exception for some governments.
Totally agree with you FLX.

There is a very very rich gent from Saudi Arabia who owns an executive Airbus A-340 whos name I can't remember. Anyone know this one and what the reg is or is there a picture of it posted on the site? This Aircraft seems to be very well used and has been seen all over the world including in many military airfields.

Even an A346 or B77W VIP will hv much better utilization potential than an A388 VIP. BTW, I think most A340 VIPs is the A342 variant that is only a bit bigger than the popular B763 VIP and probably require just 2000-2500m takeoff runways(VIP jets are normally lighter than their airline equivalent) and fit into the taxiways of almost all Int'l airports of the world. The Sutan/King of Brunei owns 1 operated by Royal Brunei Airlines.

Maybe he's gonna buy FSX. Now that Mourinho's gone and Chelski his toy will sink down the table like bricks.

Yes i too think that was a stupid decision. Afterall is said i am a MUFC fan but Mourinho was a good manager and it will take someone really special to replace him. I cant think of anyone who could do it in fact.

Guess it was not Abramovitsj but Prince Alwaleed bin Talal...
Makes sense, much more space to park the A380 in the desert than somewhere in the UK.
