Airbus does not have customer codes only a 3 digit designation as to what engines the particular aircraft has.
A320-232 has IAEv2500 engines
A320-214 has CFM56-5 engines
A330-203 has GECF6
A330-223 HAS PW4168
A330-243 has RRtrent772
just a few examples

Agreed that the code does not identify the customer, but it could also identify different structural variations.
For example, the easyJet A319 have two overwing exits. Is this reflected in the type designation?
A thought about the A320 - the early ones where not fitted with winglets (i.e. the early British Caledonian order now with BA - most of the G-BUSx range). Does the designator reflect this absence of winglets?

Hi, it's me again. I've just had a quick look on both BA and AF 320 fleet and on the 320 production list. The early versions which Stewart mentioned are msn 1 thru 21, all version -111. All 320 manufactured later than that have -2xx, so it's obviously the A320-1xx series which does not have winglets.
I hope this helped a little to understand Airbus' codes.

C-ONE :- Quite correct, the visual difference between the A320-1XX and A320-2XX is the absence of winglets on the -1XX.
stewart :- The reason for the easyJet A319's having 2 overwing emergency exits instead of the standard one per side is that the seating configuration / capacity exceeds a legal requirement. Not sure of the exact wording off the top of my head, but I would'nt like to be one of 150 people trying to get out of the aircraft in 90 seconds with only 6 exits. Thinking back, the maximum capacity of a B737-2XX was 130 pax and they had 2 overwing exits per side. Similarly, the A320-2XX has a capacity of 180 pax and they have 2 exits per side.
But back to the original question, the Airbus type designators do not have codes that can identify the original purchaser / customer.

I guess that although we have been mainly discussing A319/A320 in this thread, the engine codes provided by Elmer also apply to the A300, A310, A330, A340 and A380.
If 1xx and 2xx indicate the absence or presence of winglets on the A320, is there an easy decode for the first digit ?xx for the other aircraft. I guess with the A340 the -5xx and -6xx indicate the stretched and extra long haul versions.

These engine codes apply to all airbus families of aircrafts but all codes are not used on all the aircraft types.
A300/310: 0 & 2
A318: 1 & 2
A319/320/321: 1 & 3
A330: 0, 2, 4
A340-200/300: 1
A340-500/600: 4
A380: 4 & 6
For example, only the CFM56 engine is available for the A340-200/300, you can only have 1 as second digit: A340-311, A340-312, A340-313...
