Air Berlin Up On Talk Of Ryanair Interest

Shares in German carrier Air Berlin jumped 8.7 percent in strong volume on Thursday on market talk of acquisition interest from Europe's largest budget airline Ryanair.
Air Berlin said it was not aware of any takeover interest from Ryanair.
Ryanair has a policy of not commenting on market rumors or speculation, said a spokesman for Ryanair.
In May, the chief executive of Air Berlin said he was keeping an eye on the consolidating European airline market after snapping up German rivals recently to expand its network with domestic and intercontinental routes.
The airline listed on the German stock exchange a year ago with an initial public offering priced at 12 euros a share.

My opinion on this is the same as my opinion on the Aer Lingus merger proposal. THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN!
I believe if these two airlines combined they would without question be the biggest in Europe since Air Berlin has recently taken over DBA who took over Germania and even more recently took over LTU. Now this would create a monster of a company and simply cannot be allowed.

Should not be allowed. In these terms, in near future we will have in Europe and maybe then worldwide a low competiton airlines, that's not healthy for aviation good tickets prices.

The question to be answered in regard to a Ryanair take-over of Air Berlin is whether such a move is in the PUBLIC INTEREST. Personal opinions, feelings of national patriotism, gut feelings, etc., are of no importance. The matter, should there be an approach by RYR, would have to come before the European Union Competition Commissioner who would decide on the issue of PUBLIC INTEREST primarily, although there may be other issues to be considered.
Low fares are great for the travelling public but no-one except the RYR chief executive could possibly believe that a monopolist no-service, (sorry) no-frills carrier would be good for the industry or the traveller. Could they?

I am surprised that RYR, a single aircraft type operator, would be interested in acquiring the new Air Berlin set-up. I am sure they are aware that there are 737-800/700/500/300, A320/319/321, Fk100, plus with LTU joining in, A330-200/300 and even a 146!

I dont think it will come as a surprise to any of you that I am not in favour of Ryanair taking anyone else over as a takeover by them would create a monster of unbearable proportions, in both size and service.
Ryanair if they are looking to takeover air berlin, are doing it like they did for EI, for the benefit of one airline only and that of course is Ryanair.
I would look at this takeover as a possible way for FR to manipulate their fleet. I will explain what i mean by this. after the EI takeover was blocked a story broke in the irish media that ryanair are going to retire about 46 of their oldest 737-800s. These were most likely destined for EI should the bid have gone through, and goodbye to everything airbus.
By buying air berlin, FR would have access to more -800s, and could exchange old for new, equally they could do what they did to Buzz, and what they planned to do to EI and that was to asset strip it for their own gain. Equally this would give FR access to markets in eastern europe, north africa etc, where at preseent they do not hold a presence.
Ryanair are a malicious commercial force and I am glad the EU have the power to reign them in. In this case, legislation is most certainly good for competition!

You are absolutly right in every aspect of your comments EI-DUB. When in Ireland last week I was told that Ryan were because of the EU powers to as you say reign them in they will look to generate situations to their own advantage in Europe and beyond to create a Eueopean giant (or monster) that will dominate the airline industry.
As we have said before they don't give a monkeys for the long term of EI or any other airline for it is all Ryanair and Ryanair at any cost.
I can tell you that many of Europe's top airline executive are concerned about the situation and have talked about going down the same budget line as FR but men of greater integrity whithin have advised against such a move.
Industry executives in the USA look at FR and think that this is a fantastic model to copy and I have to admitt if I didn't know FR as I do and had no experience of FR's service or attitude towards it's passengers and yes I have to say it's staff I would look at the rapid growth in this airline and be amazed at what I see and would want to have some of this for my company but what we have is a company that has grown by feeding on others and by propagating a doctrine that we will give you a very low fare for we are not here to rip you off as others have done over the years and we will give you the service you have asked for but up until we came along no one listened and provided. What a lot of utter garbage FR.
If and when Ryanair enter the Trans Atlantic market our friends in the States will see the true side of this ruthless company.

let us also not forget Air berlin ordered the 787..... and ryanair want to set up a long haul operation..... and the 787 is sold out for the considerable future, and ryanair's future long haul arm is more than likely favouring the 787 due to their close relationship with boeing.... this could be a way to get 787s quick.

Having made further investigations into what little we know about the intentions of Ryanair/Air Berlin I can again confirm that many airline executives in Europe are getting quite jumpy about the situation. Things must be kept quiet between Ryan/Berlin as they do not want the E.U. or the other European airlines to know what is going on at this stage.
I have also heard that a merger which would form a new large European airline could take place with the new company being formed under a new more Euro wide name but as I say this is all speculation at this stage as no one knows what is going on in dark smoke filled rooms.
If this comes to pass then there is no reason why the 787 could not be used for Trans Atlantic services and other longer range aircraft could be leased in to provide cover until new 787s were delivered. Interesting or dangerous times ????
