At 15.11 today (Saturday 30th June) a vehicle drove into a front door at the check-in area of Glasgow Airport's terminal building.

The vehicle caught fire on impact with the building and is currently outside the terminal building. A police investigation is underway and emergency crews are at the scene.

Glasgow Airport is now closed and a motorway cordon has been established by the police. We are advising passengers NOT to attempt to travel to the airport. All flights are suspended until further notice.

Following the incident, the terminal was evacuated in line with our emergency procedures and those people still on campus are sheltering in buildings near the airport.

Two men have been arrested who were in fact driving the car when it crashed into the main terminal at Glasgow airport.

This vehicle would have to first of all crash through a security barrier then drive along a restricted road for about 100 mtrs and then thanks to newly errected security ballards was prevented fron entering into the terminal.

Blackpool airport is also reported to be closed due to a security alert but so far no further information is known.

Well this is starting to look serious when factoring in two car bombs found in London as well. Does look very suspicious. Whether or not this incident is terrorism will become apparent over the next few days. I presume that knowone was hurt in the incident?

A phased re-opening of Glasgow Airport is underway. Two flights – from Orlando (flyglobespan) and Ibiza (Thomas Cook) have arrived, and a further two flights are en route. A MyTravel flight to Ibiza is due to depart shortly.

A large number of flights have been cancelled. Passengers are advised not to come to the airport unless they have received confirmation from their airline that their flight is due to depart. Friends and relatives are advised not to travel to the airport, unless absolutely necessary.

Passengers arriving for departing flights will check-in from the T2 check-in area. The main terminal check-in area remains closed. Unfortunately, delays are expected.

The forecourt around the airport remains closed. However, slip roads around the airport are now open

If this is a terrorist attack then the terrorists should be linched and banged up for life in a high security prison and throw the keys way

The main terminal at Glasgow Airport has now re-opened following an extensive clean-up operation, less than 24 hours after the airport was attacked.

All 39 check-in desks are now fully operational. Passengers are now being processed in Terminal 1 and T2, and all 64 airport check-in desks are functioning.

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow Airport said: “We have worked through the night to get Glasgow Airport back up and running, and get passengers to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible. With the support of Police, our airline partners and BAA staff, we have been able to re-open the main terminal building within 24 hours of yesterday’s attack.

“I want to pay tribute to the tremendous courage and dedication shown by staff across the airport, and to our passengers who have acted superbly throughout this difficult situation.”

Operational impact
Today, Glasgow Airport was forecast to handle around 32,700 passengers. However, a large number of departing flights have been cancelled and passengers are urged not to come to the airport unless they have received confirmation from their airline that their flight is due to depart. Anyone uncertain about the status of their flight should not travel to the airport. Similarly, friends and relatives are advised not to travel to the airport, unless absolutely necessary.

Between 15 and 20 flights are expected to be cancelled, with five diverted via Edinburgh, Prestwick and Newcastle airports. More than 45 flights are on course to depart, though passengers should expect delays.

The schedule is likely to change throughout the day, and passengers are asked to confirm the status of their flight with their airline.

Two suspects rammed a petrol-filled, four-wheel-drive vehicle into Glasgow Airport on Saturday in what police described as a terrorist attack linked to a twin car-bomb plot foiled in London.

I can confirm that we believe the incident at Glasgow Airport is linked to the events in London yesterday,  the chief constable in the Glasgow area, Willie Rae, told reporters.

There are clearly similarities and we can confirm that this is being treated as a terrorist incident.

Rae said the vehicle, a green Jeep Cherokee, was driven at speed into a main, glass door entrance to the airport terminal and then exploded in flames. Two men were arrested after the attack, one of whom was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Rae said the badly burnt man was found to have a  suspect device  hidden on his body, but he would not confirm it was a suicide vest. The hospital briefly had to be evacuated while the device was inspected.

The attack, which Scotland's first minister described as a  terrorist incident , came barely 36 hours after police thwarted a possible al Qaeda plot in London in which two cars loaded with fuel, gas canisters and nails were left on a busy street in the centre of the capital poised to detonate.

Britain's Home Office announced it had raised the national security alert level to  critical , the highest ranking and one which indicates further attacks are expected imminently.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in office for just four days and already facing a series of security threats, convened a meeting of Britain's top security committee.

Afterwards he said:  I want all British people to be vigilant and want them to support the police and all the authorities... I know the British people will stand together united, resolute and strong.

After Saturday's attack, security sources cautioned about further incidents.
