B787 roll out

The first Boeing 787 assembled has been moving around the Boeing plant at night. The official roll out date is July 8, 2007 (the American calender format is 07-08-07).

That is great. I may understand soon will be starting the flight tests.
Boeing is responding rapidly to A380 with its 787. I think 787 is the future for replacing 767s and the 200-250 seats niche is the future of many international airlines.
Unfortunately i will be in Brazil this date.
787 is a big step to Boeing to make a numerous with many airlines around the world. Air Canada will replace its 767-200/-300 with 787s?

King, is under construction a 767-200 of scale 1/144, i will use Air Canada decals. C-GDSU is the registration to be put. I flown beteween YYZ and YUL some months ago.

787 is the future for Air Canada and many others airlines, but i see especially the AC order is numerous.

Which is the launch customer of 787?

ANA is the launch customer.
In terms of firm orders, they're the biggest with a total of 50 for both the -8 and -3 variants. Nex in line is QF with 45 and then AC with 37.

If we include announced options and purchase rights, QF is by far the biggest customer with upto 115.

Actually, I hv stopped referring the 200-250 seats mkt as a 'niche' long time ago. 'Mainstream' is more accurate. 10-20 yrs ago, many major airlines only use 350+ seats 747/744 to cross the Atlantic. Today, I think only UA, BA, LH and VS hv a few flights that use the 400+ seats 744 to do tranatlantic.

In contrast, the A380 is definitely in a small niche that is getting even smaller in the future.

Boeing was right about 2 major things they predicted earlier: 1st, 'fragmentation' would spread quickly and became the 'norm' in the mkt. It did and we see airlines fly more smaller planes over longer range. 2nd, the 787 program will reach 1st flight in 2007. In less than 10 days, a 'concept' plane we've been seeing only on computer screens will become reality.

Boeing will have live internet webcast and satellite TV broadcast of the B787 roll out. Roll out scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Seattle time (Pacific Daylight Time). Other news reporting 50,000 people is expected to be at Boeing plant. I guess I need to camp out to stake my space.

Spot Planes, you're gonna habe your space for 787 roll out at Boeing plant? That's great.
I think live internet is one of items most searched today on flights. To acces emails and websites we are living for that everyday.
787 is the sccesful for 767 replacements and the 250 passenger is the future of most airlines around the world.

I really thought the 787 was in competition with the A340/A330/A350 and 767/777 market, not the A380 market that was the 748. Or has something changed???? I really see the A380/748 fighting it out in the asian/middle east   Niche  Market and the 787 will basically own trans-atlantic, europe and the americas

Just watched the roll out very boring looking plane... would have hoped for a classier paint scheme. Doen't help any your sitting in a dark room and then bright sunlight streams in to blind you. The A380 premier was way better.

I watched the roll out in person standing outside Future of Flight. The plane rolled out of the Painting Building at 0935hr and towed across the highway to the Assembly Plant. The highway was closed while they tow the plane across (on a bridge over the highway). Boeing emptied the green 767/777s from the Assembly Plant to make room for the ceremony.

Rolls Royce also brought their B747 test bed with Trent 1000 engine (for B787) parked next to the Future of Flight building. Open to the public who has paid the entrance fee to Future of Flight. I only brought tele lens therefore not able to get the whole plane in my photos.

The Boeing Painting Building is about half a mile away from Future of Flight with PAE runway in the middle. My photos of the roll out were not publishable as there was heat haze distortion. I uploaded one photo to airfleets.net which was taken across the highway from the Assembly Plant where the plane was finally parked for the invited guess. If you have watched the webcast, this photo shows what the outside looks like.

Well since it has to be tested in a wide variety of conditions they will vary significantly but i do believe that somewhere in Canada will see one for winter testing at some point in time. No idea where though

Comparing with the 767, those Trent 1000 engines on the debuted 787 are huge relative to the fuselage! This just surprised me because these engines do not look as big as they are now if you take a look of the 787 concept images. The diameter of the 'real' Trent 1000 looks almost as wide as the GE90-110/115 on the 77L/W.

Does anyone know what are the major differences between the Trent 900 on A380 and the Trent 1000? I speculate that the core and the fan may be similar on both types.

Just leanrt that QF has very recently converted some of their 787 existing options into firm orders and existing purchase rights into options:

This brings their latest total firm order upto 65, options @ 20 and purchase rights 30. QF is now the biggest airline customer of 787. Assuming QF Group will replace all of their current 43 units of 332+333+763 with 65 788+789, that still means a more than 50% jump in fleet size in this size category. I wonder what are they going to do with these extra units... Either QF has a huge expansion plan or they intend to re-sell these extra planes to eager buyers(Especially those who can't wait 7-8yrs until their 1st 787 is delivered) and make a decent profit. This re-selling idea doesn't sound that crazy given that:
1. QF has plenty of early delivery slots and new delivery spots won't be available fm Boeing till 2014 or after.
2. Given this kind of order size committed way back in 2005 before 787 became so 'hot', it's almost certain that QF is gettng steep discount per unit. That's easy profit even if QF re-sell their delivery slots only @ Boeing listed price.
3. Beyond these 65 firm orders, QF still has 50 options+purchase rights. That's plenty to meet their mid-to-long term network growth at a very stable/confirmed unit price.
