I think both: fuel efficiency and maintenance costs.
B777 is twin engined, so the costs are very low.

A380 and B747 four engined, A380 carry more passengers and the effiency is the issue for Airbus.

A350 has more modern efficiency in terms of fuel, burning than the A340.

777-200LR and 777-300ER has better efficiency than the B747-400 on terms of fuel burning too.

I hv not heard this topic raised for a long time although I still remember heated debates were raging about it non-stop in all related arenas fm pilots<professionals>, airline 'bean-counters'<Financial mgmt>, passengers and airliner enthusiasts in mid-1990s, around the time when both types just entered service. It's interesting ult mentioned it here again. After more than a decade, the 340 and 777 hv both reached maturity stage in terms of operator experience and mkt penetration. Now is perhaps a great time to take stock of how each 1 flares. To do that let's agree on the basics of exactly which model of A is against which model of B:

- A340-200(342) vs No direct competitor
- A340-300(343) vs B777-200ER(772ER)
- No direct competitor vs B777-300(773)
- A340-500(345) vs B777-200LR(77L)
- A340-600(346) vs B777-300ER(77W)

Observations:

1. 772ER is generally more fuel efficient and cost less in maintanence than 343 over the same route(More or less for reasons cited by Werkur737)

2. 772ER has slightly more range than 343

3. 394 units of 772ER are delivered and 241 units of 342/343 are delivered(Latest figures fm B and A)

4. Pretty much the same story with the rest of the family: 345 vs 77L and 346 vs 77W

5. You cannot exclude the A330-300(333) vs B777-200(772) from any 340 vs 777 comparison as the 330 and 340 differ only in a few areas. A even treated them as 1 single program during development.

6. 333 is generally lighter than 772 and therefore a bit more fuel efficient over the same route but carry almost the same max. pax

7. 333 has slightly more range than 772

8. 87 units of 772 are delivered and 213 units of 333 are delivered(Latest figures fm B and A)

9. Cost of pilot upgrade training fm A320 to A330/340 is much much less than say 737NG to 777

10. When the 1st 340 entered scheduled service, no airliner with 2 engines were allowed ETOPS 180mins upon service entry. It was also a time when Boeing foresaw FAA approval for 777 to do ETOPS 180mins upon service entry and described some of their 777 customers might be  adventurous  enough to operate 777 transpacific eventually.

In case you wonder, I'm neither an A or B supporter and I think the 340 and 777 are both great airliners that hv been gracing our skies.

Looking at it without chosing any side, the 777 is more fuel efficient since it has 2 engines less than the 340. B/c of that, maintenance costs are a bit lower too.
