Looking at the situation that LHR is in i can't understand why they haven't built a new airport that has more space to grow. I mean just look at what was achieved when Osaka and Hong Kong relocated. Neither of those airports have limitations to growth and they aren't the only ones as proven by more recent projects in Dubai and Thailand. LHR is completly boxed in and needs a successor. I think this is more a case of when rather then if. LHR can keep trying to improve its facilities but without new runways it can't grow or reduce delays.

Not to long back i looked at a website campaigning for a new airport to be built in the thames estuary and this seems like it would be an excellent idea. For starters they would have four parallel runways which is two more than LHR and then there would be more terminals.

My guess would be one for BA and other one world, one for Star, one for Skyteam and two others for anyone else.

Other constructions should include a new high speed underground rail link and new motorway infrastructure as well as a rail link to the channel tunnel.

I understand that re-developing LHR would probably be cheaper for the government in the short term, but long term its going to cost the u.k. billions more to keep LHR than re-build else where not to mention they could build new homes where LHR currently is.

Just wondering what everyone here thinks of this idea and whether it is a good sollution or just a poor suggestion.

London already has 5 international airports...... I don't think they could really justify a 6th???

No this was intended to close Heathrow and possibly Gatwick and completely restart fresh

The thing that would make me rather sceptical about the move to this new airport, should it happen and shutting down the other two, the headache that it would cause for airlines. I would also consider it to be hugely wasteful of new resources, there's a new terminal being built in LHR i think??

Should this ever happen I think it will be very much later rather than sooner!!!

another solution would be delegate either Heathrow or Gatwick as a domestic and possibly europe only airport with the other serving as an international airport for america, the middle east and asia... Not only would this help diminish congestio but it would spare building yet another airport

The South of England needs a further expansion but to close LGW and LHR with all the money that has been put into them and move to a new Airport would be wrong. Stanstead is up for development but there are many objections to this as so many people have been convinced that aircraft are the curse of the earth and cause global warming.

LHR is getting a fifth terminal but what it also needs as dose LGW is a further runway but there is no way this will happen at LHR unless drastic measures are taken to clear houses and factories to make way for the runway. LGW could take a further runway but again the environmentalists have objected and won.

It will be at least two years before we know if further development will take place at STN but what happens in the mean time.

Should airlines start to use smaller aircraft from more of the regional airports and let the 747 / A-380 types use London's airports ? This has been put forward but I dont think it would work as London is king when it comes to the Airline Business.

SJR just might be right and what is needed is a new South East England Airport.

LHR does have two new terminal development projects. The first is T5 and now they have been given approaval for the replacement of T1 and T2 when T5 opens next year.

The U.K. government should never have allowed LHR to get as big as it did since as many other places have they should have planned for the future better. I know that when LHR was first used for international flights there wasn't anywhere near the amount of traffic we have to day but LHR should have been replaced in the 1980's with another airport that was situated in an area that could grow. Instead the government decided to try to build new airports in the hopes that this would drive interest away from LHR but it failed since LHR remained in demand.

LHR is a big hub and so to get rid of all short haul flights to LGW just wouldn't be the right way to go. A new airport would work and should have been constructed some while back but the U.K. government threw money as LHR in the hopes they could improve it.
