February 19, 2007 represents the 25th anniversary of the first flight of the Boeing 757. Exactly 1,050 aircraft were built between 1982 and 2004, when Boeing took the decision to end production but the curtain has certainly not fallen on this innovative airliner.

I think B757 is a niche plane between 737 and 767. When Boeing design the 757, I don't think they expect the 737 can grow to the size of a 757. The 737-800 can practically replace the B757. The commonity between 767 and 757 become insignificant.

The 757 is a great aircraft and out of all the aircraft that crashed there have only been a few that were down to problems with the aircraft. I can only think of a few accidents actually.

Aero Peru (Crashed in to the Ocean)
American Airlines (Crashed in to a mountain)

To be honest though the airliner is not needed now because Boeing can stretch the 737 and when the 737 is replaced i reckon the aircraft will be designed with this in mind

SJR I think there was 2 757's lost on 9/11 but it wasn't anything to with the aircraft so would that count?

which was the DHL. I knew there had been nine lost and a number have been scrapped but the 9/11 757's as G-NIKO stated don't count as aircraft failure, that is classed as pure evil. I forgot completely about G-BYAG of Britannia and knew about the Birgenair but couldn't remember the name of the airline. AeroPeru was lost because of a bit of tape over the static port and from what i hear Birgenair had a similiar accident. G-BYAG was lost after it came off the runway and the American in 1995 was pilot error was it not. Obviously 9/11 was terrorists so that leaves DHL and China Southern and i am not familiar with either of these accidents

The DHL flight crashed on July 21, 2002. Registration: A9C-DHL. Uberlingen, Germany. It collided with Bashkirian Airlines flight #2937, which was a Tupelov TU-154. 71 were killed, 2 on the B757 and 69 on the TU154.

As there seems to be a kind o demand for these wonderfull birds maybe Boeing will launch a NG Version. I think A 757 looks much better than a 737/800/900. They look to long and low. Where as the 757 was just right and a very capable flying machine. New avionics etc etc and we'll maybe see the 757-400NG Who knows.

Due to the fact that the A-321 has a shorter range than the 757 and that there is a demand among the worlds airlines for a 180 / 220 seater airliner Boeing   could be   is the word on the streets, looking at a replacement for the 757.

There would be a short to medium range, a long range and an extended range version available but when this might come to pass who knows.

I have often flown the 757 and it is a superb airliner having everything a pilot or passenger could want from this type of airliner although some of the charter airlines pack in 122/128 seats and it is very cramped.

Maybe a NG of B757 with a larger range. An aircraft with winglets and based on 757-300.
The 737-900 and the 737-900ER are the competitors, so 737s are on the final of its existence.
captain bill is right, A321 has a short range, and the niche of 757 continue to exists.
757 with 215-239 seats, -200 and -300 version doesn't needs a larger version, only more range improvements.

Untill now i don't understand why Boeing drop 757, you may think and is a reality that 737-900ER is not on 757 niche, because 757-300 is capable to carry 239 passengers.

I think they are more likely to look at developing a new aircraft to meet these needs

I think the variations of 787 will meet these needs.
