Aer Lingus announced today they will make an order for 14 aircraft in the second quarter of this year for fleet replacement. They have asked Airbus and Boeing to put forward offers. It's down to 350v787.

What are your thoughts???

I think they will go for the 787 beacause the A350 isnt out until a few years at least but they might go for the A350 since they have A330's.

I would place my money on the Airbus product for continuity reasons if nothing else but they have gone full tilt before from Boeing to Airbus so they could go back again.

EI-DUB do you know anything about the future plans of ownership of EI ? I would hate to see Ryanair getting involved.

I agree with captain bill, because Aer Lingus has all Airbus fleet, so the continuity reason it seems the best for airline.
It will continue its standard Airbus fleet.
If i have to choose, i would bet my money on A350, a better product than the B787.

I agree that for continuity and training purposes, the 350 would make more sense.
HOWEVER, do you think EI are willing to wait around until the 350 is scheduled (and the 380 delays would not provoke huge confidence) to be delivered??? The 350 is another 6 or so years away. whereas with boeing they could have new aircraft before that probably.
It could go either way.

And captainbill, I would hate to see ryanair involved. I don't think there would be anything worse for the airline.

IF the order is in Q2 2007 i don't think they will go for the A350 as it has a while until its first flight i really think they will go for the 787 on this matter.

This is a tight one to call but one thing is for sure, only they know what they are looking for and who can provide it. My personal guess would be that they will stay with Airbus because they are planning a long expansion over the next few years. On the other hand as many people have pointed out if they did go with Airbus they would be in for quite a wait so maybe some more A330's in the meantime.

Equally, it is all very well getting more 330s but that is 'old' technology and the older 330 in EI's fleet will need to be replaced soon. They need new planes, and relatively quickly. hence that is why the 350 would be not so appealing, but saying that, as has been mentioned here, for continuity etc it would make more logical sense.

i no what you's are trying to say but after the A350 has done its maiden flight it would proberly be at least another 2 years to enter service after its maiden flight so i think they will go for the 787.

Only if Aer Lingus expand its long Range routes will hace necessity of more widebodies.
The long range routes operated is from Dublin to Boston, from Dublin to New York and from Dublin to Chicago.

Anyone knows more long range routes operated by Aer Lingus?

Yes, they do DUB-LAX and they also do DUB-Dubai.

Aer lingus have said they plan huge long haul expansion, and they intend for their long haul fleet to number 14 aircraft in a few years time. Hence the need for more widebodies !!!!

It's been rumoured in the irish media that they are looking at washington (dulles), san fransisco and possibly somewhere in florida, for immeadiate long haul expansion.

With the arrival of the 2 new 330s this summer their initial plans are to simply increase the frequencies on existing routes.

Considering we were just pondering EI's expansion, I'm not going to start a new thread, but the Irish transport minister Martin Cullen has announced that EI will start a direct Dublin-San Fransisco route in the autumn, provided the open skies agreement is reached.

I didn't think while typing my last post that this would happen so soon. Great news for EI!!!
