I read recently that if Alitalia isn't making money by the end of January 2007 it will be out of business because it will run out of money. This led me to thinking about what can be done.

They have an ageing fleet with the backbone being the MD82. They also have a vast range of different types and need to simplify their fleet. In my opinion this would be a good way to do it:

A319-100 (additional aircraft added)
A320-200 (additional aircraft added)
A321-100 (The same as now)
B767-300ER (start to faze out)
B777-200ER (The same as now)
B777-300ER (add these to the fleet to replace 777's that have moved onto 767 routes)
B787-800 (add these to replace existing 767's)
B777-200F (replace MD11F's)
EMB-170 (additional aircraft added)
EMB-145 (additional aircraft added)
MD11F (faze out completely)
MD-82 (Replaced by a mix of 170's, 319's and 320's)
ATR (Replaced by a mix of 170's and 145's)

As well as simplifying the fleet Alitalia should try to sell its maintainance department to another Italian company in that business and then pay to maintain their fleet. Cut routes that don't produce profit or start a low fare airline to serve routes with low yields. Offer advertising on aircraft. Simplify it bases, so that one is a secondary base like Munich is to Frankfurt for LH. Leave skyteam and join a alliance which benefits them as an airline. (This maybe Star Alliance or One World)

If possible reduce work force (i know this will be difficult with trade unions in Italy). But will be possible with a fleet simplification to reduce the amount of pilots needed. (three or four types no longer operated and one new type which is not the same as other members of the fleet) (787).

If they do all of this they may just be able to survive. Although they need to act fast. If anyone has any other views on this subject feel free to correct anything you think is wrong with this plan. Issues, however such as:

-The cost of doing this for Alitalia is probably more than they can afford
-Unions in Italy would probably prevent the airline from doing this

It would be a shame to see Alitalia go, as its been around a long time (since 1957). I believe that Alitalia need new and larger aircraft (maybe should invest in 787, A350etc and should start to get rid of their MD82's) they also need to start doing more long haul journeys.

As said in another Forum about the end of Alitalia, Alitalia will not shut down. It will sell some of its aircraft or the Government will pump in money.

yes i agree it won't vanish completly but i think downsizing won't solve the problem. They need to get something done because eventually the government will get sick of bailing them out and just stop doing so. They claim that they won't pump anymore money in but i don't believe it personally. The point i was making is if they don't get money by the end of January they will go out of business.
