Hi Everyone
Im planning a trip to Amsterdam Schipol, and wondering what the specatators terrace is like their and what the views are like from their and also if their is any other places to spot from that are easy to get to by foot. Also im wondering if anyone has any photos that they have taken from the specatators terrace? Also can anybody give me a list of plane of which fly into here.
Thanks in advance

The spectators terrace is very good for spotting. I think five out of seven runways can be seen. You can see the end of the cargo terminal and most of the KLM, Northwest and Eastern airlines park on this side of the airport. Depending on the day you can either see landing or taking off aircraft, however picture oportunities can vary from the terrace. I have visited twice and had two problems. The first day i visited it was very hazy and the second their was too much heat haze. As regards to pictures i haven't got any on the website so i can't show you any yet. I may be able to make link to some of my photos or put them online in the next few days.

Airlines i have seen at AMS in two visits.

-Dutch carriers (KLM, Martinair, Arkefly and Transavia)
-Spanish carriers (Vueling, Iberia, Air Europa)
-German carriers (Lufthansa, Air Berlin)
-British carriers (British Airways, Flyglobespan, Easyjet, Bmi, Jet 2)
-Turkish carriers (Sky Airlines, Corendon, Onur Air, Turkish Airlines)

Other European Carriers

TAP, Portugalia, West Air Europe, West Air Sweden, Blue 1, Jat Airways, Alitalia, Swiss Int, Easyjet Swiss, Cargolux, Air Bridge Cargo, LOT, Malev, CSA, Sterling, Austrian, Austrian Arrows, Air France, VLM, Air France, Flyme, SAS, FlyLal, Lithuanian Airlines, Aeroflot, Pulkovo, Ukraine International, Meridiana, SkyEurope, Bulgaria Air, Denim Air, Armavia, Cargolux, Budapest Air Service

Non European

RAM, Arkia, EL AL, Dragonair Cargo, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, U.S. Airways, United Airlines, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Atlas Air, Japan Airlines, Nippon Cargo Airlines, China Southern, Kenya Airways, Kalitta Air, Air Astana, Iran Air, Eritrean Airlines, Surinam Airways, Singapore Airlines Cargo, (Great Wall Airlines) (defunct), JAL Cargo, Georgian Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Asiana Cargo, Korean Air (330), Korean Air Cargo.

I am sure there are many more but these are the ones i saw. If you search on google.co.uk you should get the official website which you should be able to get flights for a particular day. Obviously this may affect your choice of day to travel. The viewing terrace also has an entrance to the terminal which has a board of what aircraft (reg included) is at which gate. I do know that Jade Air Cargo also operates from China.

I went twice:

20-04-06 and 19-07-06. These were a Tuesday and a Wednesday and the contrast between days was amazing. Personally if you are going in the summer, don't make the same mistake i did. Take a hat and some sun cream it was 37 degrees on the 19th July and i came home bright red. I spot at Manchester in the United Kingdom (usually) but i do travel a bit, so if there are aircraft i may be there.

Hi,

You should check this website for more information about Schiphol spotting http://www.schipholspotter.com/ Here you'll find an overview of all the spottingplaces. Hopefully this will help you out for your trip to Amsterdam Schiphol.

And take in mind that if you are going to spot over there you have to beware of the sun and not only to get red but also with photographing because the sun in the morning is shining straight in you're face,so it can be a challange to take pictures without backlight.
And if you want to go go in the last weekend before the whole last week of juli, that is the bizzy-est weekend of the year(between 130.000 and 150.000 travelers per day).

Also you can look here for the movements(also dutch aloud but place a request and it's answered in english)

I visited AMS on the 20th September and thought what a great day I had on the terrace, from a spotting and photography point of view.
Until I got home when I found of the 600 shots I had taken 400 were covered with heat haze and jet wash and totaly useless, this problem is quite common at AMS terrace so others have now told me.
I still plan to go back in MAY 2007 but this time will travel around the runways to overcome the heat and wash problems from the terrace.

Here is one good example from terrace

http://airfleets.net/show/?pic=67220

If you do decide to visit terrace bear in mind the problems
you can have from the terrace, with photos from there.

Shame North West have stopped flying the DC10's, AMS was the best place in europe to see them.

To sum up whats been said the terrace is great for logging registrations and will be better when it has been expanded, but during the summer months there is too much heat haze and during the winter months it also has lots of problems. Photography wise there are probably better places (i didn't visit these because i was only there for one day). First time i had over 350 new regs's

Schipol is better than FRA in terms of terrace spectators. The best terrace of whole world. I've been there, but i forgot my camera in Philadelphia. Was a business trip to Aviation Megastore.
You're gonna like it a lot, the terrace is very good!

Try getting a dirt cheap ticket to some very nearby destination, just to get to the Gate side and allow plenty of time to be there. The views right up the aircraft is worth the investment. AMSs atmosphere is great, especially as all destinations are under one roof.
