What is your worst ever delay and why?

Just thought we could all express are aviation nightmares!

A minor annoying delay I had recently had was Thomsonfly Coventry - Palma Aug 2004, 6 hour delay due to left rear exit light bulb not working!

But i dont remember much of this one when I was 8 I was flying to Birmingham (BHX) from Palma de Mallorca (PMI) with JKK (spanair)

(all details were given to me by my mother, I was very tired in this delay and slept through most of it)

According to the old bird (my mum) :

We had a delay of about 12-14 because of a big power cut in palma bringing the airport to a standstill for 4 hours earlia in the day. Are delay was so long becaus ethere where many flights that hadnt been cleard from the airport and our plane hadnt even done its 1st run to the UK when we arrived at the airport, we was on its second run. We wasnt offerd no food vouchers or accom or nothing. We finally got onto the plane aound 7 hours later, and got to the runway then the left engine on our MD8X a/c went tech, so we had to waite a further 2/3 hours for another A/C, then we got onto the plane but because of the ammount of passengers who wounderd off round the airport we missed out take off slot, so we, again had to wait another 40 minutes for the next take off slot. Eventually with a half full plane. (many pax decided to fly other airlines after the A/C went bust, many decided that Spanair was 'un-fit to fly' we touched down in BHX. All i can imagine is that there were a lot of holiday makers who missed a big chunk of there holiday - and for the iceing on the cake, spanair lost my suitcase! - this was a long time ago and i only remember little bits of it.

Whats all of you guys worst delays, problems and incidents experianced? Come on its time to have a good bitch about airlines that have let us down!!!!

So far I have been a lucky passenger, and the worst ever delay was last December on a flight LIS-SID (from Lisbon to Sal Island, Cape Verde, for those not familiar with the location, it's a small country archipelago south of the Canaries and near Senegal Coast).
My flight was scheduled to depart Lisbon at approx. 20.00 GMT, but as the Cape Verde airline (TACV) has currently two 752, and the newest one back then had a problem in Sal Island we had to wait for the other to arrive from Paris, and return this time to Lisbon so my flight was at 05:00 am next morning.
9 hours delay ! it holds my record.

For myself the record is 5 hours

It was on an Air France flight from LAX to CDG.

Flaps were out of order, and we wait 5 hours in the plane during the repair.

The more interesting is that I was on the next flight, but I changed my flight at the airport by this one because it took off 4 hours before the original one. And when I was waiting on the plane during the reapair, I saw the other Air France plane took off. So I changed my flight to win 4 hours and I lost 5 hours...

I have also another episode but this time with Iberia. It is not really the classic delay, but close.
In Feb 2004, I went from Lisboa to Lanzarote, with a stop in Madrid. The first leg (LIS-MAD) was perfectly normal, but before I left home I checked over on the internet the weather on arrival in ACE, and strong winds were predicted.
The flight left Madrid with a delay of 2 hours (but those two hours were well spent making photos ), but the problem was that ACE airport was closed. So we had a diversion to Gran Canaria (LPA). We should stay there only for an hour or two, but in fact we stood for more than 4 hours, untill we got on board our flight.
As we were rolling for take off, it seems as if we were going for a rolling take off, but the a/c was rolling very slowly. Right after that, the Capt said that ACE was closed once again, so Iberia arranged us 4* and 5* hotels (not bad really) for that night (B&B), and earlier in the morning of the following day we finally made it to Lanzarote ( 15 hours after the normal arrival time)... .
I just imagine the stress passengers on board of a Monarch Airlines and a European Air Charter felt in the same situation in LPA, because we left the aircraft and waited at the airport, while they stood for several hours inside the aircraft

My worst was back in July 1994. I this case it wasn't the airline's fault or the weather, it was a terrorist attack.

What happened was that at around 10 am a bomb exploded in downtown Buenos Aires in the AMIA building, a Jewish center, killing 86 people. At that time I had already checked in for my 12.10 flight EZE-SCL on LAN Chile, unaware of what had happened. We boarded the plane, still not knowing what happened, and we actually began taxiing towards the rwy, but suddenly on the cabin's main screen there was live tv image of a building blown up. None of the pax knew what was going on until the pilot told us that we had to go back to the terminal to have our bags checked again and that 1 hour later we would be departing. The truth was that the Argentine govt. had closed all borders, so we ended up staying in the terminal for about 7 hours. The worst thing is that 11 years later there hasn't been a single arrest for that terrorist attack
regards

My worst case scenario became true in 2001, as we should fly from Duesseldorf to Punta Cana with Condor flight DE5112. It all began at the check-in where we were told that the airplane is coming in late from Izmir, so we had to wait for 2 and a half hours. As excusation we got coupons for free drinks and snacks in the airport bars.
Then the plane came and due to a technical problem we had to wait for another hour until we could finally board the plane.
Said - done, but after half an hour sitting on our parking position the captain told us that we can´t leave because of further problems with the brakes and a new part of the break has to flown in from Frankfurt, where Condor is based in.
Before we had to leave the plane he told us why the plane was originally late - the reason was that there were some bomb detonations in Colombo the week before and so our plane flew out german and austrian tourists to Munich and had to follow the schedule to Izmir.
We had to wait further 2 and a half hours until we could finally depart to Punta Cana with a complete delay of 7 hours!
That was the only day in my life I barely could stay at an airport. One more hour and we all would have gone insane *g*

So, that was my worst delay.

Florian from Aachen, Germany

Eeeee well its the good old CKT flight..the rickety Tristar to Dalaman when i was about 4 (14yrs ago now)..i faintly the situation, it was a night flight to start my holiday when my mum told me about a delay. Apparently it was due to the a/c going tech somewhere, and resulted in us having a 10hr delay at manchester.
Q. What did we get for compensation?
A. A meal which looked like vomit and wasnt even edible.
I think there was about 5 pax who ate it so my mum told me, the rest of us went hungry. Then to top it off after we got airborne, we were going to be 1hr 30min late due to some restriction or other..so we got to dalaman eventually to find us with no coach or bleeding baggage!!!
A nightmare in itself.

Another time about 6yrs ago we were going to fly Airworld to meet a cruise ship in athens..looked all good at first, we boarded and begun our taxi to 24R at MAN. .then we turned around and headed back to the remote stand in front of the FLS hanger and were asked to go back to the terminal because the ATC in athens went on strike..6hrs later and another turnaround at the end of the runway we began our journey and believe it or not, got there with no cases again.

Hi
I've had two incidents that kinda class themselves as delays (no flight I have taken has ever left or arrived on time, I've left early and arrived late, left late arrived on time, and the old leave late, arrive way late)

The first was a flight from CHC to WLG on Air New Zealand, it was an early morning flight late winter or early spring in 1994. CHC was closed because of fog, and my 7am flight was finally called for boarding at about 9am (the flight lasts 45 mins, but is scheduled for 1 hour). We boarded and taxied (in fog) to some point near the end of the runway (it was a 737-200, and I was sitting forward of the wing, but could barely see the engine). then we stopped, and were advised there would be a delay, as CHC was still closed, and nothing was moving. Barely 2 minutes later, something big landed, couldn't see it, but could feel it, followed by 2 more something big. There were questioning looks, and this must have been passed to the pilot, who let us know these were flights coming in from the Antarctica, (USAF Galaxies I'd assume, as they were way to big to be C-130s or Starlifters), and as they had just completed non-landing round trips, were not subject to the airport being closed. We finally took of around 11:30, and made good time to WLG in clear skies. On approach to WLG from the north, we were barely 30 seconds from landing, when the power was increased, and we went straight up (or as close to straight up as a 732 can go, and when we got to about 23000 feet, we were advised that WLG had just had an earthquake, and ILS and the rest of the airport had 'gone away'. We circled for maybe 30 minutes before we were finally able to get down. We arrived at the gate maybe 6 hours behind schedule, and in that time, I think we had one cup of coffee served (or tea).

My second was on a flight from LHR to MAD with BA on a 757 in January 2000 (we were in the rear of the cabin, on a mostly empty flight, with most passengers in the front). We boarded about on time for a morning flight, and were taxiiing for departure, when one of the passengers in the front lost the plot a bit (I believe she was being deported?), and first tried to open the front door, and when she didn't succeed there, tried to open the door into the cockpit. When they heard this, the pilots killed the engines and stopped the aircraft. Meantime, the stewards, and some passengers jumped on her to try to calm her down, which I believe resulted in one of them sustaining an injury when they were thrown back into the seats. She was finally calmed down and immobilised, and we had a nice back up of aircraft behind us by this time. We moved onto the runway, and slowly moved along it to an exit, where we taxied for what seemed like hours to a quiet place where we were surrounded by police, fire and ambulances. She was off loaded after 20 minutes, and the injured passenger(s) were as well. We sat there for a further hour or so before we were re-catered and finally left about 2.5 hours after our first attempt. BA were great, throughout, keeping us informed of what was going on, and they provided us with a much better meal than had already been planned, contacted tour companies to advise of late arrivals, and allowed the use of mobile phones on board while we were parked. When we arrived, transport to our hotel had been arranged, and we were only about 2 hours late, having made up half an hour on the flight

This was my wife's first long haul trip, and set the standard by which all others have been judged

Paul
