so many times i have read or heard that the 767 (all variants) is becoming an unefficient and uninteresting plane for airlines! it is true that most companie looking at 200-250 seats aircraft tend to buy or lease A330-200 nowadays as it seems more efficient. nevertheless why are some companies like JAL, ANA, Ethiopian, and LAN still ordering and taking delivery of the 767-300. especially for LAN, wouldnt the A330 be a wiser choice with cockpit commonality with their A340, all airbus fleet, etc...
thanx
fred

I think the answer is within the overall LAN fleet ( LAN Airlnes, LAN Argentina, LAN Express & ABSA Cargo ). Consider as of right now the group has:-

4 x A340-300
24 x B767-300
15 x A320-200
7 x A319-100
24 x B737-200

So you see 4 x A340-300 vs 24 x B767-300. For medium to long haul routes, it is clear that it is the B767-300 that is the back bone of Lan's fleet.

On order with Airbus yet to be delivered are:-

20 x A318
8 x A319
4 x A320
2 x A340

On order with Boeing are I believe a further 9 x B767-300's mixed freighters and ER versions yet to be delivered.

It is all very well to say the 767 is not efficient or say economical compared to the newest aircraft available, but what about the cost of those new aircraft compared to what you have within your fleet being written off over say 20 years or on a time specifi lease ? For Lan to suddenly drop 22 x B767-300 and replace by purchase or lease of 22 A330-300's would not be a wise move right as the cost would a lot ! For starters it would involve a lot a crew training and secondly the newer aircraft are not that easy to come buy, even if purchasing factory new there is a delay factor between ordering and delivery.

In addition consider LAN and many other carriers have proven, the B767-300 makes an excellent freighter conversion once retired from passenger usage.

So for me, I would not right the B767 family off. They will be flying our sky's for years to come yet and remember, some of them are not that old as the 767 is still in production until eventually it will be replaced by the 787.

Look at the short-medium haul fleet, you see LAN is still operating B737-200. Gradually these are being replaced by Airbus and not Boeing 737 NG aircraft for the simple reason for LAN  Cargo  plays an important part for its revenues. The Airbus can take onboard containers, accept the A318, but one canunderstand the A318 order for commonality within the cockpit.

Because LAN's Boeing 767's are by no means old, I am sure they will be in service with the carrier for quite some time to come. Then as and when they need replacing, who knows LAN will have a choice of the B787 or the A350.

all the best, Trevor

While you might think that having commonality with the A340 fleet as regards to LAN might be important, when you look at the infrastructure already in place to service the B763 fleet, it is easy to understand why they stick with it.

Hi Fred - You are more than welcome. It you research fleet age on this websight, you will see that across the group it is the 737's that are the oldest. Looking at the 767's, the oldest 1st flew in 1990 ( so 16 years old this year ) and the youngest first flew this year, 2006 ( a baby ! ). As said with more 767's on order yet to be delivered, and the revamping of the interiors

see:- http://www.lan.com/about_us/noticias/2006_03_21.html

I am sure LAN will have their 767 fleet in service for many years to come.

all the best, Trevor
