Hi all
This might get a few memory's jogging. I was watching air crash investergation last week and it was about a AC B767 that landed at a no longer used military airfield called Gimli. It was a very good programe. The aircraft involved took off from gimli a couple of days after and is STILL in service with AC at the moment.

My question is:
1) How can an aircraft take off from a airfield with no ATC as the airfield was disused?

2)Does anyone know the con number or reg of the aircraft involved?

Well done to the piolts involved!!!!

Any info would be great
Thanks
Paul

The Boeing 767 in question was construction number 22520 C-GAUN which I think is now in storage.

Take off is quite easy as you would advise the ATC who has authority for traffic control in the Gimli area and when the 767 gets topside they start giving instructions as to how to perform.

This happens every day with many private fixed and rota types departing from small private strips or from someone's back yard.

It was a great feat and the bars in control Bob Peason and Maurice Quintal do deserve top credit for this for as you say they had to glide the 767 from F.L 41zero into this disused airfield that was being used as a drag strip.

Have a look at

Actually AC had spend lots of money to fix the Gimli runway before the B767 can take off again. That included removing and installing again after take off the guard rails runs the full length of the runway and paving the runway.

It was July 23, 1983 that this incident happened.
Here is the wikipedia entry for the Gimli Glider
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_glider

The aircraft flew from YUL-TUS-MHV on Jan 24, 2008 as flight AC7067 for storage pending which museum will eventually get the historically significant aircraft.
