Secutity breach at Heathrow LHR

A man was arrested by security services today at London Heathrow. Apparently he climbed the secutity fence and approached an Emirates aircraft but was detained before any harm was done. His motive has not been announced. It would seem from early news reports that the security services were alerted by members of the public.
My point to this thread is that in my opinion this is a good reason why aviation enthusiasts or spotters should be encouraged around airports rather than be moved on from any vantage point that they may take up legally of course, for example car parks or under aproach paths etc. Enthusiasts will always be vigilant for anything that is out of the ordinary or persons behaving in a suspicious way and I would think that there would be no hessitation in reporting these matters to the authorities. Whats the harm in being more tolerant of people who would enhance security with out extra cost and would enjoy the chance to be of help if anything were to be amiss? After all if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear.

Unfortunately, our world is far fm perfect.
Due to lack of identification skill training and probably a bit of ignorance, airport security(Particularly in Asia) typically can't tell the diff between an enthusiasts and a terrorist when they see people hanging around airport perimeter fences.

You know guys as one who was on the original International Aviation and Maritime Security Counsel after the Lockerbie disaster I get really upset with the lack of real security at airports and the abundance of unnesseccary so called security checks. I get upset when I am asked to take my shoes off because every airport should by now have scanner mats which will detect either drugs or explosives hidden in shoes. There are also many other ridiculous so called checks that cause lengthy ques and cause delays.
I can though board a ferry boat and never once will I be asked to go through a scanner or account for anything in my luggage or on my person. Some ferries that I use from time to time have over 600 passengers on them and as a terrorist if I wanted to make an impression why would I take out for example a B.A./Loganair Saab 340 with seven passengers on board from EDI to IOM when I can sink the ferry in the middle of the Irish sea with 600 souls on board.
What happens when we board a train, well in the UK nothing you just get on and off you go BUT again they are talking about installing airport style arch scanners so train fares will go up and delays will be even longer.
Aviation security has gone wild and all these additional personnel that have to be employed as Security people with very little training have to be paid for and who pays - you and me and every other passenger and for what because if planned properly if some fanatic wanted to take an aircraft down it would happen believe me for there are still areas of poor security but the powers that be think they have it all closed down by putting passengers through the third degree before boarding.
It's good to have a good old rant at 04.15 in the morning.

I agree absolutely with CAPTAIN BILL .
Being a frequent flyer for the last 15 years or so , I have encountered all kind of stupid checks and control points and not necessary stupid questions , by Security people , who at their majority are poorly paid , part time working youngsters , with no idea of what they actually do.
Besides as put by Captain Bill , if anyone wants to get a plane down , causing a big Bang , then it seems to me that he can easily find his way through of some security breaches.
May be the Security heads , should examine again all these ideas and make our traveling life less miserable!

You know speedbird9468 when I first started plane spotting at GLA we had to take our radios to the tower to be checked out and were given a certificate allowing us to use it. We had to cross the taxi way to get to the tower and no one tried to stop us. if we did that today we would have 10 million armed police and 6 million special branch officers in attendance.
The police used this for the certificate for identification purposes.

I'm with you speedbird,
I would have no problem with paying a small administration fee to obtain an I.D. card to be produced on request to the relevant authority if I was asked but living in the UK as I suspect you do I am aware of the ongoing debate re. I.D. cards for the general population and the resistance to the Big Brother syndrome that surrounds them. To me a proper I.D. card for all occasions including travel within the UK and as a means of verifying your identity wether viewing planes from car park one at Gatwick or at the supermarket buying alchohol to prove you are 18 or is it 21 these days cannot come soon enough.

Sorry John morris I live in REC Brazil and here I can stand on the bridge near the airport or in the local supermarket car park. The authorities here are rather slack when it comes to enforcing the law. I can even stand or sit on the entrance ramp to the first level departures ramp at either end to get a good view and not be challenged. As to your Big Brother syndrome I have nothing to be scared of as i'm doing nothing wrong. Unfortunately its the small minority that ruins it for the rest of us inocent people that have to suffer doing a hobby or pastime. I'm sure the criminals of the world also have a past time but not of the ''good natured ones like us''
