I must say it looks rather dashing in that colour scheme. So much for patriotism. I never would imagine that the US would use an A380 for AF1. A 747-400 or 800 yes as the although the 747-200 at the moment is getting on it is probably the most safest plane in the world, and a 400 wouild be a suitable replacement. But lets not forget AF1 apppendage is only applicable to the aircraft the president is travelling in. Wether that be a Cessna 172 or a F22 fighter.

Just a tactic in squeezing Boeing to offer a better deal for the 748I BBJ variant for presidential use and 748F military variant for USAF. The U.S. gov't didn't had a non-U.S. option 30-40yrs ago and must went with 742 for AF1 and C5 for USAF. Now they do even though U.S. domestic politics+near term U.S. economic prospect will quickly make this a powerless threat.
Isn't competition a wonderful thing? Also, think about it, it'll be a surest/quickest way to raise French pride/arrogance(Already pretty high among the world's nations) when the U.S. president visit France on a AF1 diplomatic flight flown by A388 VIP.....

I must say that that would be a real kick in the teeth for the Americans if the Government did opt for the A380. Butas you mention the way the Us economy is going at the moment its going to affect a lot of people. BTW. Who says what and buys what in the Whitehouse. Does the current president give the order? Or is it others?

This is something unbelievable if that really happens. Which I very much doubt! It won't happen in this lifetime IMHO. Indeed, we're talking about the US President here. Just can't imagine that his administration would pick anything else than Boeing. It's just unthinkable, no matter how hard we as Europeans want to believe! But such thing would NEVER happen. Period! Speaking of pride, some seem to believe that pride is only a french thing... Come on guys, I've heard so many times this I'm proud to be American! . To certain people this could be patriotism and to others it's pure arrogance...
So please, take it easy on the Frenchies:):) Some people in the US may have a negative image of us. But in the end, it's more clichés than real facts due mainly to misinformation.
Nobody's perfect:):)
Cheers!

Being English and very patriotic although living in Brazil. I feel the same way as you. Americans are very good business negotiators. Brazilians (sorry) are not very patriotic. Ive lived here for 9 years now and have never seen one fighting for what is right there to pacifist.

speedbird9468:
The U.S. presidential fleet is under the jurisdiction/op mgmt/maintained by the USAF. All related costs are within the overall U.S. defence budget. So any fleet replacement proposal/approval work their way through with something like this: Proposal(Within the overall defence budget proposal) fm within the Pentagon based on Total Cost/Benefit Analysis->Secretary of Defence->President->Senate's military budget review committee->Senate->Congress. In other words, the U.S. Congress has the ultimate say in when and what to do with any fleet replacement just like any other military hardware procurement. If every party approves, the procurement order will officially be fm the Pentagon. I assume the process will be similar in any other modern democratic societies where heads of gov't hv financial accountability to public funds+assets.
So it's unlike an oil-rich Mid-East prince or a dictator who can order whatever VIP aircraft directly anytime he wishes.
Seriously, the way I see it and aside fm the patriotism issue, the decision has a lot to do with bulk purchase 'discount'. e.g., if the U.S. go with 748i BBJ for AF1 ops, pricing of such contract will definitely be related to other Boeing Defense system products such as C17, F/A18E, B2, etc. in which the Pentagon already/will hv contracts with Boeing. The same applies to the choice of A380 VIP for the presidential fleet. Contract price will be minimized and make more sense for the Pentagon if they also purchase e.g. A400M and other EADS products.

Don't worry, the French don't hv the exclusive franchise of being labelled particularly proud/arrogant by other nations(Although without fail, foreign pax always get taxi drivers with an atittude in Paris but that's another story...). That's why I said their pride/arrogance is pretty high among the world's nations . There're plenty out there which are equally/nearly as proud/arrogant as the French. IMHO & generally speaking, the most proud/arrogant nation among all has to be the U.S.....not much explanations needed for this 1.
