Don't get me started. I have both bad (lots of it) and good (only 2) comments on CX.

First the good:
1. Recent CX YVR-HKG-MEL, In Flight Manager got me 2 seats for my kids stuck at HKG that cannot get on CX flight HKG-MEL. My kids finally met me at HKG and flew same flight HKG-MEL.
2. Return HKG-YVR of the same trip I got upgraded to J class

Then the bad:
1. HKG ground agents insensitive and unsympathetic to customer's need. (long story, related to 1 above)
2. HKG check in agent impolite and poor attitude especially towards non-white.
3. Flight Attendants also showing the same poor attitude.
4. When my kids were babies we were on CX HKG-YVR flight that ran out of milk in Y about 4 hours out of HKG. FAs shown the same insensitive and does not care attitude. The excuse was that the catering did not expect that many babies on the flight. I said  excuse me, the babies did not get on the flight on stand by basis. They all got confirmed reservations days ahead. Your catering people is sleeping at the switch.  No offer to get milk (the only food for the babies) from J/F. I finally demanded to see the Flight Manager and the FA got the milk from J/F. Wrote a letter to CX and never got a reply.
5. Same trip, FA gave me a long face for bringing the bassinet.
6. The impolite Ground Agents and FA also caused my dad to stop using CX. He travels a lot HKG-MEL.

ok, if u want me to give u my experience...
I was on my flight from Hkg to YYZ:
1. The seats are too small, I was about 5 foot 6, and my knees are tounching the seat in front. Of course, not once...
2. My mom throw up in a turblence, The flight attendant told her to throw it in the washroom. Men, its a turblence, how can she go out of the seat and walk while she is still sick...
3. On my return flight, the first part were perfect. But after refueling, things change. Attendants with poor attitude. They couldn't hand out water in the whole flight because they are busy of something...
4. When I first ask them to give me cards to play with my friends, the flight attendant said  We don't have one.  Then a few minute later, someone in few row in front of me buy alchol, the guy beside him ask the same thing as I did CARDS. The flight attendant did wat he had wanted, HOW ABOUT ME?

My experience was not as bad as those already stated earlier.

14 mths ago, I traveled HKG-JFK via YVR in main cabin C-class on a CX 744. Unfortunately, the ceiling/vent above my seat was slowly dripping water since push-back which render the use of my laptop impossible(Unless I want to risk an expensive repair+electricute myself). FA did responded quickly by sticking towels to the ceiling panel gaps but it was futile. The dripping finally stopped a few hrs before we reached YVR. Yes, it was a full C-cabin but what the FAs should hv done were to immediately get me another seat in F-class in which there were a few vacant ones. At the fare I paid(Over US$8,000), it's a bit ridiculous to ask a customer to endure a wet seat for 8-9 hrs! For a supposedly 'Best Airline', CX can't even maintain a decent C-cabin...what a joke!

Since then, I flew 3 short-hauls and 1 long-haul with CX in either C or Y class. I find their FAs+Ground Agents service+attitude inconsistent. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's quite bad, sometimes they're attentive+helpful, sometimes they're arrogant+rude. Strangely, none of which are dependent on which cabin class I flew. My view is that CX's biggest problem is service consistency.

I'm starting to hear complains about CX's new C and Y classes fm friends. I heard that while the new C is claustrophobic(High sidewalls), the new Y has too little knee room when reclined(Fixed back shell).

This yr when I flew transpacific to/fm JFK on C-class, I didn't take another chance. I considered only JL,NH,NW(Best price),AC(New C-class cubicule) and CX was completely out of question. Finally, I selected JL and it was great all the way. FA+Ground agent services were as good as ever. CX has lost me as a customer.

With credible competitors fm home like Oasis HK to break its monopoly, CX may finally wake up and smell the coffee.

I had a colleague who transferred from BOAC to CX to fly CV-880s back in the 60s and at that time CX were emerging as one of the worlds leading airlines. Through the 70s 80s 90s and up until recently CX were a wonderfull airline so what has gone wrong ?

I have my own ideas which are highly political and I would like to think I am wrong. Is it to do with the Chinese influence ??? I don't know but if you have any thought on this I would be glad to read them.

CA has a sizable stake in CX and vice versa through a recent stock swap. Given the much lower service standards in the typical Chinese airlines, may be CX was trying hard to align standards with their Chinese partner = )

To be fair, CX is still among the best overall in Asia-Pcf and even in the world. U can easily do worse with a lot of so-called 'pride of the country' major carriers. It's just that it's hard to recognize them as top 3 anymore(I still don't know how they get the 'Best Airline of the Yr' awards in various surveys).

What is CX most focusing on? Their price are lower than others...

I cannot understand how CX get the Best Airline award either.

Last Nov, I traveled in Aisa with Air China (YVR-PEK, PEK-HKG, HKG-DLC), Malaysia (HKG-KUL), SQ (SIN-CGK, CMB-SIN), CX (CGK-HKG), SriLanka Airlines (SIN-CMB), NH (DLC-NRT) and Air Canada (NRT-YVR). All in J class. So I experienced J class of 7 airlines in one trip.

CX was not outstanding among these 7. Malaysia and Air Canada were my favourite in this trip.

flylinefrontier:
On which routes are CX fares lower than others? I find their fares(Especially J/C-class) higher than competitors on almost all routes. Take a look of the fares of these 4 key routes(Most profitable) of CX and U'll easily find that they're the most expensive yr round:
HKG-NRT(Or any route to Japan)
HKG-JFK
HKG-YVR
HKG-LHR

Spot planes:
I hv also tried MH's latest J/C-class on their 772ER 2 wks ago on HKG-KUL and find it fabulous in nearly all aspects. The seat is of the same comfortable design of JL's award-winning J/C-class Shell Flat seat(I hv also tried this in early Oct). I specifically selected the last row in which the whole section consists of only 1 row...there was no other pax and I felt like a king traveling in a private cabin! I would also like to try AC's new J/C-class cubicule on their new 77L plying the YYZ-HKG non-stop route. The design looks very promising. Frankly, I don't know how CX can still offer an inferior J/C-class seat on the same route but with a tech refuel stop in ANC(CX's 343 used on this route can't do non-stop) and still charge significantly higher fare than AC.

Consumers seem to be stuck with CX's supposedly superior image. Another example: My Hong Kong friends and I are planning a holiday trip HKG-NRT in Feb08. I found the following lowest discounted fares inc. all tax+surcharge are available:
NW Y-class: US$705
CX Y-class: US$769
NW J/C-class: US$859
CX J/C-class: US$1,667

Less than 12% diff between CX's Y and NW's J/C fares! NW's J/C-class is a 176 degree recline semi-flat seat with 60 inches pitch so it's at least on-par with CX's best current generation J/C-class seat. Regardless, my friends still selected CX Y-class cos they like CX better.

My experience are HKG- YYZ x3(YYZ, where I live)
HkG- Seoul x2
HKG- PEK x5 or more
These experience is traveling during low season or there is a discount... :
The flight between HKG and YYZ:
AC, can be lower than CX, but you have to order earlier or the price will raise each week. C unless its a low cost season. CX have the same price even one week before the flight but the seat would be full by then.
AC:
1.Had a excellent time: When you arrivaled Hong Kong or YYZ its plus the time you get home, it is the perfect time for bed and rest...
2. the price is higher even it is on sale $16,740 to 18,140
3. But the seat is much comfortable
4. Great attendants
CX: Cx have the flight arrival late evening about 9;45, which you got super tired after you fly, and you need to have safety security checks. U would finally home at 2:00.
In the other flight. You would flew on mid night.
1. really tired
2. Long flight 19 hours..
3. The seat aren't that comfortable
4. In Anc during refueling, you have to get out of the plane and have more securtiy checks.
5. But CX got many passengers because after they arrival, most people trasnsfer to another flight to southern Asia...
5. And they have cheap cheap price. $12810
6. Poor atitude attendants

In Asia hubs it is fine because the flight is not that long, but Dragonair is much better. Better leg room... serivces...

flylinefrontier:
U're absolutely right about CX's connectivety around Asia-Pcf fm HKG. No need to go through additional security during transit in HK and that's a major plus after a long transpacific flight. AC, in reverse, can't do the same fm their YYZ hub to the rest of N.America....tons of security during transit. Departing fm YYZ and flying a single carrier to a non-hub city in Asia-Pcf, CX is probably 1 of the best choices available. KE has comparable or better cabin service and connections to Greater China fm their ICN(Incheon) hub but connections to the rest of Asia-Pcf is not as frequent. Another option with excellent cabin service fm YYZ especially to S.Asia is EK via their Dubai hub but total travel time is longer. Given the significant Asian communities in Toronto, not many quality Asian airlines(I find it hard to rate CA,AI,PIA,etc. as quality airlines) serve YYZ, are there?

U may be right about the fare of YYZ-HKG depends on timing. I guess it's just diff mkting strategy. I fly CX often and find that they hv a habit of continuously advertising/showing on website cheap fares that are often sold out when U actually book them. On the other routes U hv stated, I can easily find cheaper alternatives yr round that are actually available:
HKG-ICN - TG or OZ
HKG-PEK - CZ, CA and often KA

CX will soon start YYZ-HKG non-stop with B777 in addition to the YYZ-ANC-HKG

From YVR we now have Oasis Hong Kong

I also found out from Airliners.net > Site wide search ( on the top right)> Seach for TRIP REPORT...

I found out that the new cabin weren't that great from people's comment. And why do they need to have the 3rd flight to JFK?

flylinefrontier:
I flew JFK-HKG last yr and that flight was fully booked wks ahead. This yr, my colleagues flew the same route on CX and they've to book almost 1 mth in advance but still paying full fare for J-class(No early-booking discount). Load factors, driven by heavy demand fm biz travellers, are consistently high between major Asian cities and NYC airports. Any airline can easily fill seats on JFK-HKG these days.

Another reason for CX's 3rd daily JFK-HKG is their plan to extend that flight to start flying JFK-LHR(1 of the most profitable on earth) in 08. They've already got the 5th freedom authority long time ago and hv been just waiting to receive their new 77Ws to be deployed on this route. This will effectively allow CX to independently operate, for the 1st time in their history, a RTW(Round-The-World) JFK-LHR-HKG-JFK schedule linking all 3 financial capitals of the world. I believe no other airlines currently or has plan to run the same or similar RTW flight(Pan Am and UA had something similar in the past though). U can look this up fm CX's website.
