For advertising about their new cabin, CX put on a roadshow with a trailer installed with the new cabin seats. This is open to the public.

Detail info and schedule here:

Can anyone explain how the new economy seats can recline without intruding on the person behind?

Slide the seat cushion forward. Your feet ended up under the seat in front of you. Only limited movement (recline) due to narrow seat pitch in Y class.

My girlfriend tried CX's new Y-class seat FRT-HKG 2 wks ago and felt its leg room is slightly less than the current version.

The new design also created some knee room by relocating the magazine pocket fm the seatback in front of U to your own seatbottom directly behind your feet. It's a 'fixed back shell' design concept so I guess it focuses on improving access to the aisle....a current seat in fully-reclined position in front of U can easily block the way to the aisle fm your window or middle seat. The optional 3-points seatbelt(Feasible only in a fixed-back shell design) is also a nice safety enhancement especially during severe turbulence - plenty of these in winter on transpacific routes.

Like it or not, we'll begin to see more new Y-class seat fm other airlines with the fixed-back shell concept, e.g. JL's upcoming new Premium Y-class: http://www.jal.co.jp/en/inflight/inter/premium_y/information.html
