Is there really a need for DAL to operate daily B763 flights between ATL-FRA/STR/ZRH as they are all in the general vicinity of one another. I know that it must be profitable otherwise they wouldn't be doing it but still. What gives?

I think you answered this yourself. Flights would have been dropped if not profitable. And close as you say they are, if I wanted to go to Frankfurt - I would not want to be told I had to fly to Zurich!!!

If DL has the capacity for all these routes they should be operating all these routes. Currently DL operates out of Manchester and Gatwick from the U.K. and they operate the JFK route through LGW after purchasing the rights to do so from UA. Good forsight by UA as today they would have been expected to give up the slot at LHR as well. This way they made more money as they can lease the slot at LHR to another airline

Considering the connections Delta has in Atlanta it does not strike me that there is a huge market for delta in Europe even in the FRA/STR area. Furthermore there is no competition at STR concerning connections to the U.S..

1. They fly with smaller aircraft, many regional long-hauls.
2. Delta does not operate routes that make no money.
3. Delta feeds its intense US network via ATL.
4. The airports have large cities and areas with enough potential customers and wealthy people.
5. Nowadays it´s nearly more expensive to get from STR to AMS an the ground than to fly to ATL with DL.

Delta has announced LHR flights from JFK, ATL, and LAX in cooperation with their Skyteam partner Air France. LGW will also be maintained. Advance bookings very good!

It would appear that DL long haul routes are very profitable but the domestic routes drag the profits down. I have gone into some of the reasons for this in another thread.

DL also fly ATL - EDI - ATL with a 763

DL's Int'l longhaul routes hv to be more profitable than domestic ones for 1 simple reason: Southwest & JetBlue don't fly Int'l longhaul yet.

Delta is on the last hurdle, the U S Justice Department's approval, on their takeover of Northwest Airlines. Final approval expected in next 90 days. DL announced that 30 new international destinantions will be added in 2009. Understand several more are European. Anyone knows what cities/routes?
