I've never been in China, but i know that in Hong Kong HKG Chep Lap Kok and Shangai Hongqiao Airport are some of the best places in China for spotting.

So...have a nice trip and remember to take good photos. I assumed you're gonna upload the photos here in site.

Good Luck!

I was in PEK (Beijing Capital), DLC (Dalian)and PVG (Shanghai Pu Dong) last year as a passenger. All my spotting was in the terminal buildings. Here is my experience:

PEK: Foggy and smog all the time (Nov and Dec). Many Chinese airlines and lots, lots CA (Air China) planes. Many CA planes were parked away from the terminal, not enough gates. International airlines spotted are Iran Air's B747, Ukarian Airlines B767, LOT B767 and Northwest A330. Terminal 3 under construction across the runway. The old Russian style terminal still stands.

PVG: Again foggy and smog. In Shanghai for one week never saw blue sky. The terminal building is one straight line. One end is international and the other end is domestic. Mostly MU (China Eastern) planes. Do not miss the one and only maglev train, top speed at 430 kph for about 7 seconds. Between Pu Dong city and airport is 4 minutes. Same distance by taxi took about 1 hour.
