Brazilian Carrier Varig was forced to give up its membership of the Star Alliance at the end of January, as it no longer met the membership requirements.  In order to deliver the Star Alliance benefits, products and services to customers around the globe on a consistent basis, our member carriers' work to certain standards and processes,  said Star Alliance Chief Executive Officer Jean Albrecht. Unfortunately, Varig will no longer operate as a network airline and will therefore have to give up its membership in the alliance.

However, Varig has simply moved alliances and joined oneworld, which has become the only major airline alliance with any representatives in South America (south of Mexico). Other local members include LAN Airlines, LAN Express and LAN Peru, with LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador due to join soon.

Eleven more airlines will become oneworld members this year: Japan Airlines, plus affiliates JALways, Japan Asia Airways, JAL Express, J-Air and Japan Transocean Air, plus Malev Hungarian, Royal Jordanian, Dragonair and the two additional affiliates. They will expand the alliance's network by almost 100 destinations, giving a total of some 700 airports in almost 150 countries worldwide.
