Two weeks past we had a little discission going about Dundee Airport and I have been thinking about some of the other little Regional Airports in Scotland and the North of England that could do well with some investment and Carlise was the one that took my fancy.
I used to load courier express packages out of Dundee and Carlisle when Euroair had a HS748 service fron Dundee via Carlisle to LHR and passenger numbers were good.
Has anyone any information or ideas about the future of Carlisle.

Bill

I personaly hope Ryan air should not be allowed to use carlisle.Ryan air are cutting out smaller airlines that cannot compete, just how supermarkets are doing to small shops. If passenger levels were good why was the service from Dundee via Carlisle stopped??Euroair no longer exists so why did'nt another company take over that route?
All these routes that were stopped when companies closed has made me think about starting up my own airline!

If Mr. Stobard gets involved we can look for good things in the future. He has done realy well with the haulage business and he is a person you can trust. There is a good book available about his life and support from his wife. A good read for all.

I was at Carlisle yesterday for a look around and did see the sign  STOBART AIR WELCOME TO CARLISLE AIRPORT
Had a look in Air North and there are some good light and Helicopter movements at the airport but nothing big to get excited about. A new large building is going up and as I was unable to speak with anyone I was wondering if any of you guys knew anything about it. Is it a new terminal ?
G-NICO advised us that Rottenair sorry Ryanair were sniffing about but the terminal is still as I remembered it from way back and could only accommodate about 20/25 people at the most.
There IS great potential for the right carrier and with the Stobart's involvement the future could be bright.

The new building is a replacement for the old ww2 hanger which had become unsafe.

Stobart Air holding company W.A. Developments International has ordered 2 Scania Airport Fire Appliances to replace older models and bring Carlisle Airport into a higher category. This is part of Scanias biggest ever U.K. order for over 500 vehicles for the Eddie Stobart group. Deliveries begin in March at a rate of approx 42 per month. Not known when fire engines will arrive, firemen have a new Mitsibishi 4x4 to play with at present, also 3 very smart Ex Belfast City Airport Simon Protectors and an unusual Stonefield R.I.V.

Are you there Capt Bill, reason there is only light traffic at moment is that CAA has slapped a weight restriction of 12.5 tons on the main runway. Has been a lot of large planes landed over the years, the biggest probably landings by PAN AM Boeing 727 after Lockerbie.

Thanks for the information nelg. So a lot of work will have to be done before anything happens at Carlisle. What a shame.

Regards
Bill

Plans have gone to Carlisle City Council for permission to build a replacement runway same size as old main one with instrument landing equipment, approach and runway lighting, new taxiways and large aprons. Also a huge 500,000 sq ft building { 7 times the size of a large supermarket } including warehouse and distribution facilities, new passenger terminal, offices, cargo hangers and new air traffic control centre. Vehicle car parks, fuel storage, improved drainage and other associated infrastucture including new airport entrance from the main A689 road.

Yes as am I. Currently on airlines mogul Carlisle is my base and i would love the opportunity of maybe starting a new airline to operate from there. Although i doubt that will ever see that happen i can see the bright future for Carlisle Airport.

Have a look at Carlisle Airport website, you can click on to the brochure in news and development, target date for a decision is 14.1.08. If the plans are refused or delayed the Eddie Stobart Group will move to Preston and the whole project will go belly up ???.
