Dundee airport is currently running at a loss of over £1million each business year, which is expected to rise to almost £2 million by 2007-8 [5]. Despite rumours of closure or being taken over by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, no decision has been made for its future [6]. At present the airport is looking to expand with more scheduled flights, although this would be limited to regional aircraft. Larger aircraft used by low-cost airlines, such as Boeing 737s, would have insufficient space to operate on its runway, which cannot be extended.
Does enyone no what will happen

Dundee is one of these airports in Scotland that could be developed if the right airline was to take a good look at the potential. It would as you have said need to be done using smaller jet or jet prop equipment. (come on FLYBE)
There used to be a route to LHR via Carlisle and it did very well until Euroair went bust and Air Ecosse had a flutter but were never financially sound enough to do anything long term.
Routes to STN are fine but the main London hubs are LGW and LHR and if these roues were flown they would do well as would MAN and BHX provided that as we have seen in the past the airlines do not price themselve out of the market thinking that because they fly routes such as these people will use them regardless.
Dundonians have to travel to EDI or GLA for flights but I know from past reserch that if they could fly to one of the main London hubs from Dundee they would give support.
With FLYBEA's route set up they could co-load to many destinations within the UK from ABZ as was Air Ecosse's idea in the mid 80's.
Are the city fathers interested in doing something ? If they and Scottish Enterprise got together to do something then we might see The City of Discovery take off.

Have you heard of such a thing as a QUANGO well that is what we have in the BAA who control ABZ EDI & GLA all of which are whithin an hour and a half of Dundee by car. They have huge financial marketing resorces unlike Dundee so they can go to the worlds airlines and attract then to these three airports.
Also in these days of so called Global Warming when the airline industry is being hammered for more and more tax our useless politicians in Edinburgh will also make conditions right for development at ABZ EDI & GLA and forget about the little players in the game.

so are you just saying to forget about the huge financial profit that could be made by starting up an air line from Dundee.Dundee can take smaller jets, this means that Dundee could still serve much of europe

Dundee Airport might be getting took over by HIAL group.
so there might be a better chance for services from Dundee.
i hope the HIAL group takesover Dundee airport so there is better chance of new services.
i wont need to travel far to get a flight, Dundee airport is about 1 mile from my house.
Any opinions or any news on this topic will be most appreciated.

I've read the article and i think there is a future to Dundee, but they'll needs expand the flights in the airport to generate better revenue. AIRFLEETS.NET STAFF PHOTO SCREENER

I ran a succesful flight to Jersey for about ten years from Dundee and with the support of a local agent Ramsey World travel it was a commercial success. The copmpetition form GLA and EDI wer oprtaing similar aircraft. We then ran a 146 to Palma for a season, that did not work, it was more expensive to operate against 757's from Edingburgh and Glasgow so our prices were £10 - £20 higher than those flights, I am afraid that was too much for the locals they continued to go to EDI and GLA so it operated for only one season. With a short runway the aircraft will be small and therfore not competitive for international routes and sufficient people will not pay that bit more for the convenience, therefore doomed to fail in international routes unless runway extended.

Fly Paul do you see routes to MAN or BHX or any of the other London or Southern Airports being a success. As you may know there is a young lad from Dundee who would like to start up an airline out of Dundee and he has put a lot of work into it and feels it could be a success. My past knowledge of Dundee would indicate, as like your Palma flight, that air travel more so today than ten years ago is price driven and to fly a J41 or S-360 out of Dundee unless load factors are high 70/80% would be a total loss. I think of all who have tried and have had to withdraw or have times changed.

Does anyone up top in good ol' Cambria remember Dunedin ? Na, it's not Edinburgh, that what it was used to be called. Na, Dunedin is way down in New Zealand on the South Island, not far off from Antarctica. Lovely spot, lovely lassies, 121000 people and the airport, despite one runway (3/21) is capable to take Tinmice (737s) and Nintendo-Jets (A320s). That and a fantastic AirNZ sub, freedomair.com is all that it needs to earn the title Taieri INTERNATIONAL . You see, DIRECT flights to Melbourne in summer and Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast all year round ensures that Dunedinites don't have to cruise 5 hours to Christchurch by Bus/car to leave the country to visit their neighbours in Australia and likewise attract them over to their place. Further north, Hamilton does take some pressure off Auckland with similar connections as does Palmerston North (Who? Where?) for Wellington (not that it need's it...).
Surely, the fuel price does determine a lot, but once you have enough bums-on-seats break even should follow. Be creative, invent new destinations (Fishing trips to Vargar,Faroe Islands, still in the Euro-Union) and don't forget the romantic dinnerflights in some clapped out propeller veteran. Make yourself known, put Dundee on the map. Organise a B-17 and a few Gerry-Flyers for a Re-enactment of the Battle of Britain with Paint Balls. (And don't call me Shirley...)
