im just wondering which are the best palces for spotting in the uk. Me and my dad have been spotting for quite a few years now and have never really got that adventurous with different airports.
Here are a few that we have tried before and would recommend...
Heathrow...(from the new centre on bath road)
Heathrow is not a bad one but i tip time it right if not you end up seeing mainly all BA's but early evening in the summer months is brilliant. Eva air, saudi, china eastern, korean, asiania, sigapore cargo, a couple of JALs just to name a few of our spots!
Luton...(again you may remember the spotting centre at luton but like many over place sit has been shut down, the staff never seem to mind you spotting in the short stay car park, but the price of parking is very step [something llike 4.80 a hour on our last vist])
Luton is a great airport for close up photos. If you are in to seeing biz jets this is the airport for you!! But not only does it have its business jets there are many other great aircraft. There is always something in the crago part of luton sometimes and MNG Cargo or other times a DHL (usually a Convair 580). Luton is the home of easyjet so yes as you may guess there are lots and lots of easyjets also there are quite a few ryanairs keep poping in and out. Other airlines like wizz, helavetic, aer arran, TUI, helios, BA Connect, Monarch, and first joice also fly into here.
Birmingham...
I personally like birmigham, 1beacuse it actually has a spotting deck and 2 because of the aircraft that fly in their. When going to birmingham we would get the train so im sorry if i cant help anyone out their. Some of the aircraft we have seen here are, continenatl, their are lots of Fly BE's, Air india (usually a 777), klm, alitalia, a ATR 42 FED X parked over on the far side, emirates, thomas cook, PIA, monarch, lufthansa , air malta, TUI, swiss and BMI Baby just once agian to name a few.
London City Airport...
London city again there is no real given spotting area but to the right hand side of the terminal entrance (in the cra park ) there is a plce where we stood for over 3 hours police walked up and down and they said nothing so this iu sproably the best place!
Despite the palnes being not as requent here spotting here i find excellent. It does make a change going there as the planes are alot smaller, below are agian some of the planes we have seen at london city, VLM (lots of these in a day!), Lufthansa, SAS, Air france, swiss, luxair, Scot Airways, BA, KLM.
Other good airport that we would recommend, SOUTHEND and BOURNEMOUTH.
We used to spot at gatwick but now they have closed the spectators gallery we havent been there sice so has anyone got any good spotting area for here???
Another one that we really like the look of is STANSTED so can anbody help us on that one??
If you want more info on any airport above just ask.
SO ANY HELP WILL BE GREAT!!!
THANKS

Well Manchester is good as Mark said. Liverpool has an area at the end of the runway but is very similar to Luton. Leeds Bradford has spotting areas as well but flights in and out are mostly Jet 2 with a few others. Both of these two also have very few movements. I have also been to Newcastle. I don't recommend it in a car as there isn't anywhere to park other than the short stay car park which costs £5.00 for an hour. It has Wideroe dash 8's and Air France CRJ 700's but the rest is pretty basic. I don't know how frequent movements are because i only called briefly however.
East Midlands has some interesting cargo movements but these aren't every day and it does vary. To my knowledge there isn't really anywhere to spot there either.
Although not in the U.K. I would also suggest the likes of Amsterdam Schiphol as it has some really good movements which vary depending on which day you go. There are terraces above the terminal but these do not always allow you to see all the movements as you cannot see all seven runways properly. Flights with Easyjet are quite cheap if you book long enough in advance. I think mine were (£45 return). Not sure about hotels as i only go over there for the day then come back at night. First time i went there i made about 390 new registrations.

Stansted is good for Ryanair, Easyjet and several other low fare airlines. Not to good for pictures but there may be an area at the end of the runway, i haven't tried really. Try going by train and standing next to the terminal. Not a good place to be in the winter really. Fedex and Global Supply both fly into Stansted as do american carriers Eos Airlines and Maxjet.

BOH is good as there are plenty of side roads around the perimeter and also you can park on the verge at the threshold (very close) to 08. Whether you stil can I don't know. But I used to park my 17ton truck there for my lunch break and had no probs. Also BOH has apart from the normal wizz air ezy and fr has quite a lot of other traffic to

If you fancy a visit to the west country Bristol Lulsgate is a fair day out with a good spot for viewing and taking photo's. If you go on google maps and zoom in you need to get onto Winters lane and go to the South West end of the runway and follow round till you get a view, there is a layby to park, you will need to go by car as there is no rail link to the airport although the are bus links from Bristol but they only drop at the terminal and it would be a long walk from there. The runway is aligned East to West so if you find this spot you will have the sun at your back all day which is ideal for photos and no matter which way they opperate the planes will always come past at some point as there is only one runway. To get an idea before you go log onto the arr and dep site of Bristol a'port to see what is going on. Mostly you will see Easy, Ryanair but there is one Continental 757 daily and some KLM also if you are lucky there can be quite a few biz jets. If you intend taking photos it may be an idea to take a short pair of steps about 3-4 feet should do it as the fence is not too high. The Police patrol the road often but as long as nobody is being daft then they leave you alone. Please note there are no conveniences or refreshments handy so a strong bladder is required!
