Budget airline easyJet's ever-expanding orange base at Luton airport could be dealt a blow next week, when councillors will decide if the use of its trademark colour to reclad a hangar at the airport is an eyesore.

The site, known as Hangar 89, sits on the airport roundabout opposite the short-term airport parking and right next to the control tower. Planning officers are reported to be claiming the colour scheme makes the building unduly prominent. If councillors give it the thumbs-down at a meeting next week, Luton Borough Council could take action to force easyJet to change it.

The colour war began when easyJet took over Hangar 89 from Britannia Airways earlier this year. The council report said that the airline was told by the airport planning officer that it would need planning permission to install extra windows and put up new cladding.

But easyJet claimed it was advised that planning permission was not required for the development because the building use had not changed and so went ahead without the council's nod of approval.

The budge airline is vowing to fight for its trademark shade. Huw Thomas, easyJet property and facilities manager, said: 'Most if not all the hangars at Luton Airport are branded with corporate colours.' He said that the development did not detract from its surroundings.
