I was just wondering what triggered your fascination with aviation and what, if anything, you have to do with the industry, or if your simply an outside observer. Thanks in advance!

That's kind of like my situation. My grandfather worked for AAL at EWR and my uncle is a captain on the B762 for USA. My father was a NFO in the USN on the F-4 Phantom, I have a cousin who is a KC-130 pilot in the USMC, and when I graduate college in a year and a half I want to branch aviation and become a pilot for the USA.

I was looking back at some of the older threads due to the fact that we can't come up with anything interesting to write about right now and found this one which I think there could be some further mileage in so come on chaps tell us WHY.
As for me it was all down to going to Toronto from Prestwick in 1964 in an Air Canada DC-8-43 CF-TJJ which I thought was wonderful and felt this was for me. Ever since I have been fascinated by every aspect of the industry which is also my hobby.
I qualified first of all as an engineer working on Rolls Royce Darts and Avons before going on to work on Speys. I did crash investigation work and then after the Lockerbie disaster which I was involved in, I worked on the International Aviation and Maritime Security Act working closely with security agencies from the USA, UK and Israel. (Many a tale I could tell but can't)
I worked for an all Cargo Airline for 17 years, Emery Worldwide who flew DC-8 and Boeing 727 types until they were taken over by CF-Air and then I left the Airline business to do other things which led me back very soon into the industry so I have had a full and happy life around aircraft and the industry but deep down I am a spotter and love to talk with others who are as passionate as I am.

I've always been interested in things with wings
Apparently when I was about 4 one of my grandfathers friends let me sit in his Tiger Moth, and said he would teach me to fly it when I was old enough
From then on I never looked at anything else
Cars, trains, trucks, nothing holds any fascination for me, unless it has the ability to fly
Today I get to the airport as early as I can, and even if I can't take photos, I 'absorb' as much as I can
I've even managed to get my wife enthused, so even when we are away from home, I still have someone to talk to
She takes a pretty mean photo too, when the mood takes her
Oh, I never got the chance to learn to fly the Tiger, the old guy died when I was 12, and I still haven't learned
Maybe one day....
In the meantime, I work around computers all day, not the same as working with aircraft, but, it pays for my hobby

I grew up under the Kai Tak flight path. We were poor (third world country at that time) and flying is only a dream. For some reason I was always attracted to the VERY LOUD planes flying overhead. Now I am a flyer (sitting at the back) and spotter. I only took up aviation photography recently even though I have taken formal photography training before.

I grew up in Wales and as a boy I used to be scared to death by low flying Hunters & Buccaneers screaming through the valleys but as I got older my fear turned to facination and I used to run out at the sound of every jet engine especially if I could see a Phantom, that was when I got into building models and Phantoms most of all, I was building them faster than they could roll them out of St. Louis, I still have a cabinet full today! I used to go to most of the UK airshows but when the Phantom was retired my interest dwindled.
Civil aviation is a fairly new interest to me but I am hooked and a new digital camera makes it even more fun. My favorite civil aircraft because of its raw power and elegance has got to be Concorde and I miss seeing it fly. I do have a soft spot for the old BAC-111 and B707 even though they are rarely seen.
My biggest dissapointment due to some extreme actions by so few people is that how difficult it is now to enjoy a hobby that on the face of it would do no harm to anybody!

I recall going to work with my dad once and it happened to be under the airport approach at Manchester. My dad was a blacksmith and i can remember being amazed to see planes pass low over head. A few years later we moved into my nans old house and my amazement went from there since that too was under Manchester approach. My mum also used to take me to the airport viewing park. I go on my own now but i can still remember the older times. I am also under the approach for 05R and 05L at Manchester.
