I'm just wondering which places are the best for plane spotting. This would include airports, off-airport sites, etc...
personally i like to spot right in my backyard. I know this sounds a little odd but I live 26 mi. (41.8km aprox.) away from SFO but I get GREAT views of 744's flying low over my house. That would include United, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Air France, and Lufthansa. I also see the daily KLM MD-11 around 3:15pm (aprox.) to AMS Schiphol. I just take my camera and point up. Most flights I see are headed for Europe. I also take lots of pictures of the local seaplane down on the water.
What places do you recomend so far as spotting areas?

......gotta be St Maarten, have you seen the KLM pics ! I have to settle for my wife's cafe/sandwich bar which is right on the final approach to LBA, many a happy hour is spent drinking (free) coffee and looking up as the numerous Jet2 737s etc pass over with gear down.

Toronto pearson has some really great places like near the fedex building or in the petro Canada parking lot. Which is like right before runway 23 nothin like a KLM 747 rushing over your head at like 200 feet

Amsterdam Schipol. I went the other day and there are lots of viewing areas were spotting is permitted. The Panorama Terrace on the roof of the terminal is easy to find and lets you get up and close (about 20m) with the hundreds of aircraft that are there. Some of the aircraft I saw were a Surinam Airays 747, Great Wall airways 747 hundreds of KLM short and long haul models, Transavia, easy jet, united, delta, air canada, air transat, Japan air lines, singapore airlines and BA etc. All in all a great destination for plane spotting.

I first agree with Hellomoto,Amsterdam Schiphol is great.
Only thing is that they have to many runways and on bad days they use them al...... so sometimes you have to drive around if you want to see the birds.
Also I find Dusseldorf a nice place to spot esspecialy the trainstation you have a great view from above.
In june we were to Manchester and we rented the rooms from the airport hotel and is was superb,Airplanes are there passing (taxiing and landing)within 50 meters, it was so good that we are going next year again ,this year we were there for 3 days but next year we are going for 7 days.
Than we have Challe du gaulle,Paris.I've been there when it was still possible to photograph and we were standing in the middle of the airport, you only see planes taxiing but it's trilling to see a 777-300 passing within 50 meters.unfortunatly it's offical not allowed anymore but I will go again and take the gammble to make some pictures.
And about Sydney,I don't know yet but I will go there looking at some great pictures you can make there

My top 3 of already visited airports :
1) AMS - Amsterdam, Netherlands
2) FRA - Frankfurt, Germany
3) DUS - Düsseldorf, Germany
AMS :
+ Great traffic
+ Almost no fences
+ Perfect spots
- Many runways in use, especially at peak hours (like Ton stated)
FRA :
+ Great traffic from all over the world
- Northern runway bad for pictures
- New double fence on 18
DUS :
+ Nice charter traffic
+ Close to the action
+ Two nice terraces
- Bad light in afternoon/evening, no good alternative spot
- Almost no widebodies and cargo traffic
My home airport BRU is nice too, but sometimes you have to be patient to get some real hot plane. Also few long haul passenger airlines.
Regards, Robin Bamps.

Hi
Wellington (WLG) and Christchurch (CHC) are both great airports for spotting. When I lived there I used to spend many hours at both airports just taking in the sights, smells and sounds
Nothing quite like standing directly behind a 747SP as it takes of barely 25 metres in front of you
Now I live in Sydney. At present I am listening to QANTAS engine testing. I live about 10 mins walk from Kingsford Smith. The grounds now shaking, from what I assume is a 747 taking off.
From where I live, in either front or rear courtyard, I can watch the aircraft landing, when approach from the north, or see them from directly below as they depart to the north.
A little bit down the road there's a couple of bus stops that afford great views, of aircraft trimmed for landing
One of the best places of all, though, would be the Stamford Plaza Hotel, Sydney Airport. The rooms on the airport side look directly into the QANTAS Link hangers, and feel like you can just reach out and touch aircraft taking off to the west. Depending on the room, take offs to the north can be pretty spectacular too, but in the afternoon the sun moves around a bit too much to make that any good
I also liked Madrid when I was there in 1999 and 2000. I spent as much time as I could over the 6 months I was in that city, and met some interesting people while I was there

Here in SAN, if you have a DOD ID you can get onto MCRD and spot right from the training grounds, if not get a kayak or some sort of boat and get right under the takeoff path from 27 and it's a really great view.

I have no real favorite. I like LAS and LAX but MAN is also nice. AMS just rocks because of the easy access.
I'm currently working on a new website which will have detailed maps with GPS coordinates of spotting positions. Currently still under construction and maps only available as Google Earth.
The link below is a dummy page but it has the styling and the link to the GE kmz file. If you are copy&pasting or typing, dont forget the index.htm, without it you get the live site with dummy text.
http://www.aviation-photography.nl/index.htm
The GE map includes what I know of AMS, BRU, DAB, DAL, DFW, DUS, EIN, FRA, LAS, LAX, MAN, and MCO.

I agree to what has been said about AMS but I would not recommend the panorama terrace as the actual aircraft are often blocked by something else and the interesting gates cannot be observed like e.g. the G-Pier where KLM and US, UA, CO, DL heavies are parked.
I would therefore recommend the Polderbaan or the Kaagbaan which are simply amazing.
Another great Airport for Spotting is London Heathrow.
Just get out at the tube station called Hatton Cross and you can observe aircraft on finals 27L or 27R after a short walk north. On this walk you also pass the aircraft crossing.
I would also recommend Hamburg as the aircraft visiting Lufthansa Technik are very interesting.

Manchester is only great if you aren't local. Most of the flights are operated by the same aircraft all the time. Depending on where your from their are some good flights and if you miss the registrations they put some of them on www.ringwayreports.co.uk under scheduled movements. The site doesn't have all the airlines that are based their however. For example Jet 2.com, First Choice and My Travel amoung others are not listed.

suvarnabhumi 1:
Thanx for the tip re this little hotel nex to BKK for aircraft viewing. Too bad the map on the website is mostly in Thai so no idea how far is it fm the runways or terminals. It's wonderful for overnite transit though as I always hv trouble finding reasonably priced hotels that are truly close to BKK. Fm the travel websites, many hotels claim/trick U to believe that they're near BKK but actually are not. To make it worse, most taxi drivers @ BKK only know how to get to downtown Bangkok and usually don't know how to reach the hotels near BKK. Of course, these drivers always say they know before U get on their taxis & left the terminal in the middle of nowhere.....

Every airport is a good place to spot. It all depends on what you expect.
I was at YXE (Saskatoon) last week and spotted a bunch of local commuter airlines and about 14 parked old Canadian Regional F28s.
