Sir Nigel Rudd chairman of BAA has said that they will be forced to sell of probably two of it's major airports in the South East of England. The two in question are LGW and STN. When asked about competition he said that LHR is not in competition with any other british airport but with the great hubs of the world such as AMS, CDG, Dubai and such like as hubing was and will be the future for airlines.
This could be good news but I would like to see them giving up total control of LHR.

Does that mean something else British will fall into the hands of wealthy foreigners? I'm taking a guess here and a wild one. I think STN wil be sold. LGW in my opinion is great airport for the amount of trafic it handles. Could we see the Manchester group giving an initial tender.

Yes I would put my money on STN which has become due to Ryanair and Easyjet in particular a LCC airport and there will be a limit to the charges that can be made upon these airlines.
Tha Manchester group might go for it and that could be a good move when you now look at how they have turned MAN around but on the other hand there is the speculators who take control for next to nothing, build it up and sell on normally to overseas buyers. I am not a fan of STN as a passenger so I don't really care.
LGW yes I do like and with the planned development it will become a true second London airport.

I agree. What thet have done with their other airports are is also good. There investing in the region of around 45 million in BOH if I'm not mistaken. BOH has over a million pax a year now and growing. I think they are ambitious enough to go for it and we may seem them doing a ''diligence'' very soon. I just hope it doesn't fall into foreign hands as I suspect LHR might oneday

I'm sure the oil sheikhs in the UAE are chomping at the bit to get their grubby Muslim terrorist hands on London airports. It's only a matter of time before they make a gazillion dollar offer BAA won't be able to refuse. Frankly, this scares the feces out of me.

The Competition Commission has not yet published its report into BAA but aparently BAA's Chairman Sir Nigel Rudd has already had expressions of interest in LGW from GE-Credit Suisse Investment Fund's Global Infrastructure Partners, Macquarie of Australia (with holdings in Copenhagen, Bristol, Brussels, Sydney airports), Hochteif of Germany (holdings in Dusseldorf, Tirana, Athens, Budapest, Hamburg, Sydney airports) and Manchester Airport Group (MAG).
All these (certainly Hochteif, Macquarie and MAG) know a bit about developing and running airports but it would be good to see MAG get it. Firstly it's a very successful British operator. MAG has a CEO who is focussed on the key customer - the passenger. If he was able to bring the same attitudes to bear on LGW we could end up with something a bit special. Also, he knows how to fight for a second runway!
The shareholders in MAN are the metropolitan boroughs that make up Greater Manchester and it would be quite intriguing to think of, for example, Stockport owning a piece of LGW. An interesting new aspect to the north/south devide debate!

Several BAA airports falling into foriegn hands - they already are ever since BAA were sold to the Spanish.
I find this whole idea of selling off an airport to promote competition between LHR / LGW / STN difficult to comprehend. STN currently competes with LTN at present, however from personal experience I use a specific London airport depending on where I am going. My local airport has flights to all five London airports and I would not contemplate a flight to STN when I am going to the South Coast.
As for the Scottish Airports, competion between GLA and PIK has resulted in Ryanair flying from PIK and as soon as transatlantics could use GLA, PIK transatlantic traffic dwindled to zero. Even recent transatlantic traffic has not been sustained at PIK - just think of BWIA (did not last a season), Air Transat used PIK in the late 1990's (but no more).
BAA will may not the best but they are not the worst. If one of Hochteif, Macquarie and MAG is successful in obtaining one or more of the BAA airports, how long will it be before there is another inquiry? For example Hochteif will then own more airports that BAA - who is going to complain about lack of compeition between Hamburg and Dusseldorf.

Stewart I can tell you that it was the lack of investment by BAA that led to the death of PIK as they only wanted GLA and EDI to survive. EDI is now the airport as GLA has lagged behind in marketing and development thanks again to BAA but now one of these will have to be sold off and my money is on GLA.
As for PIK today it is the pitts and I hate saying that about an airport I put so much effort into trying to prevent it's death but it is an ok airport for Ryanair whos standards and not on the floor but under it. Mr O'Leary has had something to say again today about BAA but no right thinking person will pay attention to him.

captain bill - I would agree with you. I could be really cynical and suggest that GLA will no longer be in BAA hands by the end next year. The new Skyhub will act as a sweetener to any new owner, however the root cause of this whole sorry tale goes back to the creation of BAA.
A new owner of LGW may be able to make a reasonable effort, but it is saddled with the single runway - and the planning restrictions which will prevent a second runway for quite sometime to come.
I would agree with you regarding MOL. Having Ryanair flying into an airport is definitely mixed blessings.
