I will be taking an internal flight very shortly in the USA and the two airlines that serve my route and that are within my budget are AA and United. Out of what you guys have heard or experienced which one would be better to take,
Many Thanks,
EI-DUB

For me it would be too close to call so I will run the risk of an injury by sitting on the fence.
From my industry experience there has never been a lot between them as far as in flight service but I think in recent times United have more seats in so you have less leg room but you could check that out on Seat Guru or some of these sites.
Let us know who you go for in the end.
Are you using EI across the pond ? Well who else would YOU as an EI supporter use !!!!!!

Given American's current rash of safety issues (MD80 wire problems, oxygen mask failure, multi-million fine from FAA), I'd recommend United. It just seems like American isn't as committed to passenger safety as they need to be. In terms of service AA and UA are both pretty much the same.

100% agree with captain bill. I hv flown AA and UA more than a few times since the mid-80s, both Int'l and Domestics. All these yrs, their Domestics are virtually indistinguishable in terms of inflight services(To put it nicely, equally spartan). I'm unaware of any diff in seat space between UA and AA for a given aircraft type they both fly. Though if U're flying 320 on UA, U do get a bit more seat width than AA's 737NG or 752. Mabel has a point re the safety hazard issues surrounding AA lately.
May I know which U.S. city pair U're flying non-stop in which only UA and AA hv the lowest fare? This is rare. Typically UA and AA hv the highest fares among all on the routes they fly as they're the leading network carriers. I recommend the following 4 U.S. airlines if any of them serve the cities U're flying to:
CO(Continental) - The only U.S. network carrier with still respectable domestic inflight services(Actually, often rated as the best within the U.S.). Problem: Has only 2 real hubs(EWR+IAH)
JetBlue - PTV in every seat, true value @ LCC fare. Problem: Lack of coverage beyond the largest U.S. cities.
Virgin America - Imagine LCC with style+flair, inflight std equal or better than JetBlue. Problem: Basically useless beyond JFK,SFO,LAX.
Southwest - Perpertual favourite of the U.S. flying public, LCC that doesn't mean rude & inhumane treatment to pax. Fly everywhere. Problem: No seat assignment

Totally agree with FLX.
Expect minimum service on all domestic US flights. Long queues at airport check in and security. At least they still fly to main airports not the middle of nowhere airports.

An additional note re flying Southwest: They do serve nearly all major U.S. cities but some flights may fly into 2ndary airports in the suburbs of such cities. However, most of these 2ndary airports are almost as well-connected to city centers as the primary airports. e.g. for San Francisco, U may fly into Oakland Int'l instead of the bigger San Fran Int'l, for Chicago, U may fly into Midway field instead of the bigger Ohare Int'l. But both Oakland Int'l and Midway are so close to downtown SanFranciso and downtown Chicago and hv got so much pax traffic themselves that ground transport is not really an issue.
2ndary airports in major U.S. cities are commonly used by pax with final destinations in major city centers and they're typically well connected to those centers. This is unlike the situation in EU in which e.g., Ryanair will drop U off @ tiny <airfields> with nearly no pax traffic and hundreds of km away fm any significant urban centers.

In adddition to FLX's comments Southwest has very few long-haul non-stop routes. Most flights are under two hours. Further WN does not fly to any of the U.S. airports that are very costly for carriers to operate. I.e. Kennedy. O'Hare, Miami, LaGuardia etc. All flights are 737 equipment.

I never gave a conclusion to this, I picked AA in the end, just suited me better. Service was good, the interiors were fairly dated though, 762s both way. routing was jfk-lax. on the return leg they had the new wireless internet system on the flight, however with no credit card you cannot access it at all, even with my debit card which was a bit of a pain.
