VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Three hundred and sixty-three passengers landed safely in Vancouver after a Cathay Pacific 747 flight sustained some damage. A panel covering an air conditioning unit came off. Bill Yearwood with the Transportation Safety Board says this doesn't happen very often. In my experience here we haven't heard of a similar panel departing in flight. From time to time over the last years I've heard of panels seperating from aircrafts but they are few and infrequent. The plane was on its way to Hong Kong from New York. Jennifer Pearson with Cathay Pacific says passengers were always safe. The aircraft was always safe to fly and passengers safety was never compromised, but a full investigation is underway. Arrangements are now being made so passengers can make it to their destination. Last Friday, a Quantas jet had to make an emergency landing in Manila after an explosion left a three-metre hole in the fuselage.

I hv been saying on this forum for a while that CX has minor maintainance issues with their 744s which are the oldest type in their pax fleet. Over the past 2yrs, I personally witnessed/experienced 2 cabin maintainance oversights inflight which were a bit risky in causing pax injury - both times on CX's 744s.
