I don't know about AF starting more routes out of the UK, but I have a hunch (can't explain it) that KL might do something like LAX/SFO to CDG and AF doing LAX/SFO to AMS. I think DL/NW might need to look at LAX/SFO to AMS because there is no US carrier in those particular markets. Jeez, whats next, IB from LAX to NRT? (just kidding).

I would think that KL might become the dominant force of the two (AF/KL) from the UK to USA due to KLs very good reputation in the UK. They have good connections from all over the UK to AMS and people do like them so if/when they come into LHR/MAN/GLA/EDI with direct Trans Atlantic services I think they will do well.

Well, I wonder will the mkt be sufficiently large to sustain DL/NW to economically operate LAX/SFO-AMS beyond existing capacity already offered by KL?
@ the LAX/SFO ends, neither DL nor NW has a traffic feeding hub there(DL had a LAX hub yrs ago but hv dismantled it since then). In fact, DL+NW hv tiny ops in LAX/SFO relative to UA and AA. UA nearly 'owns' SFO and both UA and AA are equally dominant in LAX. @ the AMS end, all EU feeding traffic for DL/NW will obviously come fm KL which itself has been serving the AMS-LAX/SFO mkt well for decades. If I'm a KL Europe pax originating @ a point outside AMS, why should I choose(And usually pay more even for codeshare) to switch to a DL/NW flight to LAX/SFO @ AMS instead of flying KL all the way? It may be fun for aviation enthusiasts trying diff airlines on a single journey but not for the avg pax.
When DL/NW look @ SFO/LAX-AMS, they'll essentially be looking @ a pure OD(Origin-Destination) type mkt - pax traffic between just 2 cities without ongoing connections. That's probably a small niche especially when your own SkyTeam EU partner is already in that niche PLUS the advantage of hubbing in AMS.
