The captain introduces himself to the passengers and tell us that the demonstration that follows by the cabin crew is for for safety. As we have said in a former thread less than 50% of passengers pay any attention to it and I am starting to wonder if the crew do either.
Some recent observations ;
Seat tables down during take off and landing and the crew saw this and never bothered.
Seat belt warning sign on and passengers get up and go to the toilet and again although seen by the crew nothing is said.
Twice recently I have seen people working on lap tops as the aircraft landed and the number of phones that go off on take off and landing has increased greatly.
Cabin lights not being dimmed for landing at night.
Hand luggage not placed in the overhead bins on under the seat in front of the passenger but at their feet and once more the cabin crew saw this and never bothered.
Am I obsessed or are these things not important. Having been a member of The International Aviation Security Council I can give you some reasons why at the time it was felt important that many of these things are upheld but is it really all that important.

You are not obsessed with this.
I like the window seat, so I always take note if any of fellow passengers in the adjacent seats - to the aisle - have put there bags away, as that is my escape route. On one particular flight the pax next to me got most upset that I asked him to put his bag underneath the seat, as (and I quote) if the cabin crew are not worried about why should you . Not a pleasant start to a 90 minute flight.
He then proceeded to tell me he was a gold card holder with several airlines and he did not know what all the fuss is about. I did point out that I have once evacuated from an aircraft on a taxiway, after a fuel leak had been noticed on an engine just before take-off - fortunately no fire!!. He was very quiet for the remainder of the flight.

If I'm high-up in the airlines loyalty program ladders, I'll feel ashame if I somehow forget to follow these most basic inflight safety procedures. Multiple <Gold Cards> holder of whatever alliance typically means a very frequent air traveller and therefore hv a higher chance, statistically, to encounter emergencies than the avg population. They should be the ones who are more aware/understand/concern about the importance of inflight safety.
I can accept some pax not to pay attention to preflight safety demo as some are genuine frequent flyers who might hv seen the same demo of the same airline on the same jet type a dozen times or more in a yr. Certainly, safety demo must continue as airlines always hv 1st time air-travellers and new jet types being introduced(If I get around to try the 388 for the 1st time, U bet I'll pay 110% attention to its preflight safety demo to figure out exactly how to exit fm its huge maze-like cabin during emergency!)
On the other hand, I hv a serious problem when pax/cabin crew are not following basic inflight safety procedures during take-offs/landings/turbulence. That really bothers me and actually make me nervous on such flights. I remember once I got really angry when we were flying through rough turbulence and seat belt signs were on. I was sitting in my aisle seat in Y-class near the lav reading a mag and a cup of oj in hand right after meal service. A pax waiting for his turn to the lav was standing nex to my seat in the aisle. Not only has this dumb-as? pax ignored the return to seat announcement, he was leaning against my seatback. Then, our aircraft hit a big bump and he lost balance and fell onto my lap. My mag crushed and I've got oj all over my shirt+jean. Imagine if this dumb-as? was a heavy person and my tray table arms broke-off and I was having hot coffee.....I might hv needed medical attention.
Sometimes U just wonder how can people be so selfish and totally disregard the safety of their fellow pax.
On another note and I don't mean disrespect to diff nationalities, I hv noticed diff in how pax perceive inflight safety depending on what countries U're flying to/fm/within. e.g., in most domestic flights in Japan, all pax absolutely don't move until well after the aircraft has stopped @ the gate. In most domestic flights in China, some pax are already getting their bags fm the overhead bins during final approach and many are already standing-up as soon as touch-down. By the time when the aircraft is on the taxiway, almost all pax are already lined-up in the aisles(No wonder China can produce & export so much stuff in so little time.....).

Had a friend traveling domestic in the former USSR and there was no safety drill whatsoever and as the IL-!8 was about FL10zero the pax took their lunches off the rack and got tore in. My friend discovered that there was no inflight service so this is where Ryanair got the idea.
Talking about Ryanair as we do a lot I went down to STN from PIK on a 737-230 of Ryan a few years back and they never did a safety demo and after take off they discovered this and what a giggle it was among the cabin crew.
