It has been 4 years today (24th October) since the worlds most recognisable airplane went out of commercial service, for British Airways, anyway.
Concorde was my (and still is!) favourite airplane.

Concord was indeed a great technological aachievement and was way before it's time. If it were being produced today many of the Airlines who said back in the 60s that they would buy it and didn't would today take it.
Like many other great Airliners it has had it's day and will remain in the hearts of us enthusiasts as an object of admiration like (yes and I know what you are all going to say) to my generation the passing of the great piston types like Constalation and Starliner, the Douglas DC commercials and many other types all of which were in their day as advanced as Concord was.
What made Concord everyones favourate ? Not it's luxuary interiour like the Stratocruser or it's passenger capacity like the 747 or the up coming A-380 but it was it's design shape and speed. Nothing was ever seen like it before and perhaps never again but I do believe we will see other Airliners traveling at similar or greater speeds.
The average Joe on the street wouldn't know a 737 from an A-320 or a 767 from an A-330 but everyone knew Concord.
Treasured memories of a dear old friend.

captain bill:
..many of the Airlines who said back in the 60s that they would buy it and didn't would today take it.
Would those airlines happened to be the ones who asked Boeing(Well, more like pointing a gun to Boeing's head) to develop the 787 and forget about the Sonic Cruiser during the 7E7/Y2 concept decision stage? Fuel prices killed Sonic Cruiser and for God sake, it wouldn't even do supersonic(Upto Mach 0.95)! It's hard to imagine the same wouldn't happen to the Concorde or its successor today. I speculate if a 'modern' Concorde is offered today by Airbus supported by discounts even heavier than 30 yrs ago by the British & French gov'ts , not even AF and BA would take any. People declare they love the Concorde but their wallets & hard-earned cash are not as loving. The biz case just won't work @ today's oil prices....and we've not even touch on the issue of environmental impact.
Dont' get me wrong, I greatly admire the Concorde and it's potential future successors. I'm just pessimistic about this dream becoming reality any time soon. The Sonic Cruiser drafts are collecting dust @ Boeing. Airbus doesn't even hv a sketch of something similar. Both hv a hard time just to turn concepts(e.g. Y1, Y3 and NSR) to realities to replace existing types. And seriously, other than these 2, who else can pull-off such a complex & financially demanding project?
I predict the Brazilian and Chinese will hv competing products against 777, 350 and 787 earlier than any maker begin talking seriously again about near or @ supersonic airliners. At that time, Airbus and Boeing will lose their current advantages and will hv no choice but to innovate in the supersonic sphere. We saw this in the auto industry and chances are it will repeat in aerospace......at least 2-3 decades fm now, unfortunately.
@ airshow/museums around the world, the Connie(Constellation) or Stratocruiser never fail to stop me in front of them and spend hrs around them. At a few airports, the sight of a parked/abandoned 707, DC10 or L1011 always draw my attention away for minutes. I'm now trying hard to book myself onto the upper deck of 1 of the last few remaining scheduled 742 flights(I think JL still runs one to HNL). Wish me luck!

Your spot on with your comments FLX and yes I do agree that if the USA or Europe don't build a super sonic airliner the Chinese or Brazilian will. Look at how far advanced the Chinese are with their space program.
Good luck with your planning for a trip on a 747-200.

Current achievements of the Chinese space program are only propaganda staged in a studio and run by the communist.....just kidding and I hope leaders @ EADS or Boeing Group don't think that way. Otherwise, they are doomed.
Just found out last nite that the last scheduled JL 742 flight is this mth....damn! That leaves me 1 last practical option which I don't really want to take: Book myself on an Oriental Thai Air 742 flight. They're not exactly assuring in terms of safety U know.....

Forgive my madness BUT and there is always a BUT.
A number of all cargo 742s still fly and if you use your usual effective argument of persuasion as to why you need to do this flight well who knows you just might end up in the jump seat of a 742.
Only a thought ...... I will be ok when the tablets kick in.
