I open this thread to find out about your wildest ideas about safety precautions.
Some examples: What about a parachute? (I know some smaller planes have these, but what about an A380?) Airbags? Ejector seats for all passengers?

And do you think airlines today do everything they could in view of such systems???

Best,
MRC

The systems you talk about are not practical and would not be considered by either the manufacturers or the airlines. If we had to put a parachute or an ejector seat into an A-380 the seating capacity would drop to around 200 due to all the extra weight these non practical items would add.

I beleive we can only take safety to a certain level which
again I beleive is being done and all that can be done is done.

If a window blows out at 38 zero you would have no chance to put on a parachute or activate an ejector seat but in a matter of seconds you would be history.

It is like evacuating an airliner on the ground. The book says you can empty a Boe757 in three minutes. That's fine if it is layed out like BA with 180 seats but what about some of the charter airlines 757 we fly that have 235 people packed into very tight pitch seats ?? No way and many people would be injures or die in the crush to evacuate.

Smoke hoods,I think should be compulsory. It was studied after the Manchester crash in 1986 and found that had there been smoke hoods, more lives could have been saved.
I never did understand the life jacket thing. If an airliner the size of some of the ones we have now was to ditch in the sea,I doubt there would be much left of anything. (with the exception of the 747 that ran into the bay after over shooting at Kai tak a few years ago).

The life raft thing is interesting. They must weigh a fair bit if you have a large aircraft with a raft under every seat. Could they changed for those large inflatable dinghies like on ships? and what about small individual parachutes for the pax. There must be something that can be done.

I'm afraid there is no already known and already engeenered devices to improve safety. and no need to have fiction devices . Just use WELL what you already have !

The risk is balanced between external risks and internal risks

- external risk is meteo , ATC, moutains, etc...
- internal risk is all risk you can find in your aircraft

to decrease external risk: have a better weather prediction, have better airport windshear predictive system ( Phuket...) have ATC with well trained and equipped controlers, airports with all approved standards, etc... . On just mentionned above , there is a lot to do in many countries ; and this not now technology, it's just some safety minded decisions that are required!

to decrease internal risk just have well trained pilots and cabin crew, not overtired and under paid crew ! Teach them how to decrease risks factors and give them a good standard of work. give them also well maintened planes !

Airtrnsport is not a usual industry . managers are often only money makers with very short term money issues, nothing else ! sadly !
