Age of plane spotters/ enthusiasts?

Now this may sound a strange one? But im in my mid teens and live near North London! I have been an enthusiasts for many years now but see very few spotters of my age! Obviously we know some reason for why the youth of today arent interested, but what are you views?
Or am i all wrong and are you a young spotters or have seen young spotters.
Be interesting to find answers to this one

I'm 38 years old, not young, and here in Philadelphia has no teens spotters, sure i've never seen.
Spotters spend many days, all day in airport, and teens have to study and i think have only the vacations season and weekends to spot planes.

Also the teen age of today, has some interesting in aviation, but has no good camera or money to buy, good cameras are expensive and their lenses too. We know that videogames and computers attract more attention of youth today. When was my mid teens i lived in Brazil, and had no young spotters there.

Hey Im almost the other side of 40 and since I was a young nipper my ol man and me used to tootle of to Queens bulding for a day. Now im living in Recife Northeast Brazil. We don't have the busiest airport in the world but hey my 2 daughters love to come with to the local supermarket carpark for a few hours to get some jet blast.

Well guys I'm on the wrong side of fifty and as a young lad of about 9 or 10 I started spotting and there were many other spotters of my age and many older teenagers. Your right we dont see so many young lads now and I think it is because of two things. 1. kids stay at home and play with their computers and electronic toys and 2. they feel that they will be classed by others as anoracks.
I dont collect regies as I once did but I still love a day at the airport just to look and admire what I see even though I have worked in the industry for so many years I am still a little boy at heart and like my aeroplanes.

Here in Vancouver, Canada, we have families sitting at Templeton St at the end of 26R (a park like setting) and small kids running around. However, I didn't notice any lone teens spotting. We do have young spotter (early twenties) here with expensive DSLR camera and long lens.

I am a Young Enthusiast at the age of 15 but yes we have to study and i simply can't afford a camera at spotting standard, but i'll try and ask my mum for one for Christmas lol. Plus i'm too young to drive meaning i can't make visits to Airports. only time i may get out to see aircraft is with my family to whatch an airshow.

Nice thread.
Personally I'm in the mid 30's (the nicest way I found to say my age  ) and things where I live (Lisbon) look very interesting as we have normally at the airport fellows older than me some 20 years and much younger spotters. Watching the hobby from a young guy/girl perspective things look difficult (no car to go whenever wanted, too young to work therefore to young to have enough money to buy a camera and to travel abroad and so on and so on), but I think that here is the place where I see more and more young kids enjoying their first steps (kids of 8, 9, 10 years old with compact cameras are common to see here during summer). With time, some will give up and many others will make the future of the best hobby in the world.

I too am a young spotter based at Manchester. I am 19 but since i work a lot and am in college a fair bit i dont get much time to go spotting. I have a fairly good camera. (Nikon D50) and have spent many days spotting. I have been to:
Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, Zurich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris CDG, Paris Orly and a few others. I have well over 600 digital pictures but dont have time to put them on this site since i have to do a lot of work resizing them to get them on this site.

Ya, the guide of Miguel Claudio in Spottersblog helped me out a lot on beggining when sending photos to the sites. Today i make good use of Photoshop and make sure to follow the procedures, is easy and take short time of the day.
Thanks a lot to Miguel for the tips and his blog.

Hiya, im 24 and have been spotting for 12 years. Currently in my 5th year of flying for Virgin Atlantic out of Heathrow and Gatwick as a Cabin Service Supervisor, and obviously take advantage of the job to do some crazy spotting. Everytime i go to work i see something needed! Recently brought G-VSUN back from Manila where it was on maintenance, and is a prime example of how i can end up in some cool places to log the local fleets. My current project is china. Everytime i fly to shanghai i get my chinese contact to book a domestic flight for me to go somewhere-Beijing for the 2nd time next month. I do all my spotting at work, or in annual leave, so my days off are spent doing what most guys do my age-pub and women, in that order!

Stick to plane spotting Virgin Crew as the drink will kill you and the women will marry you and not let you out to play.
In my early days in the industry like you I traveled extensivly mainly USA and Canada and saw some wonderfull stuff we would not normally see in the UK. It got to the stage where due to other commitments whilst on business I had to stop spotting and as now just observe and still love every minute of it.
I take it you enjoy working for Virgin. I never worked for Mr. B but had to deal with his company on the cargo side which I never found easy but we got there in the end.

I plan to go into the industry but hadn't even thought of becoming cabin crew
I wanted to be a pilot but i dont have that kind of cash. I just saw Jett8 Cargo but since it was dark i cant count it for the third time running.

I really do think that there arn't as many spotters of our age around. When I turn up at the permiter fence of my local airport (London Luton) most people just think another little kid who likes planes but when I get my notebook, binoculars and airband scanner out is when some heads get turned!

Yes, working for Virgin is great. Theres been a recent dispute over the cabin crew payrise, though thankfully all seems to be coming to an end before things turned sour. Great people to work with 9 times out of 10, and you generally get looked after well when experiencing issues at home etc. 7 free tickets a year to bring my two best friends (who are slightly older at 40), away with me spotting is a good perk too. On leave now so a cheeky daytrip to geneva on tuesday courtesy of easyjet, followed by two nights in miami with one of my best friends doing all the airports upto west palm beach. Cant wait!

I am 48 now, but as I kid I could not help but to be a spotter since we lived right under the flight path a few miles out from the runway. Just look up or take a 20 minute bus ride to SEA for a closer look.

Plane Spotters play an inportant role far more than sometimes we appreciate and on a number of occassion have been consulted by the authorities and the news media when certain information is required.
During the recent US Government scandal about people rendering from around the world to Europe and then on the the USA the news media contacted Plane Spotters about the movement of certain Aircraft that visited certain Airports on a regular basis and were able to prove that the Aircraft in question were being used by the CIA.
I personally was involved in the aftermath of the Lockerbie disaster and without going into any detail or breaking the O.S.A. I can tell you that Spotters at LHR were contacted to see if any of them had taken any photographs of of the Pan-Am Clipper N739PA Boeing 747-121 whilst on the deck in London.
So we can play that important role so keep on Spotting and taking these photographs for who known when your information and photographs just might be needed

I have been asked by people why i take pictures and explained my reasons but i have never been asked about certain aircraft since the only aircraft i have seen that have crashed were months after i saw them with the exception of the trail of F-GLZQ the A343 involved in the Toronto incident but i dont count that.

I know what you are saying Skid Kid. As we get older we get other things in our lives that don't give us the time we once had to spend six, eight or more hours at an airport spotting but as long as out love for the industry is still there that's good and you have that my friend because it comes through in many of your comments.

I'm 53 .Having spent 28 years in Africa with little or nowhere else to go due to flying being extortionately expensive from Jo burg,I have made up for it since being back here in England.So far we have done 28 flights to Europe in the last three years, Easyjet mostly,but have also flown Thomson and Air Berlin.

I am 12 and live 45 miles east of london, i have been spotting for 4 years and what inspired me was when I went to see relatives in Australia
I remember my first flight
LHR-SINGAPORE
BA
747-400
I asked my dad when we were going and suddenly the engines powered up and we were on our way. This is what inspired me.

I'm an hour away from an international airport witch is Edinburgh so i can't do spotting really since i can't drive and i'm too young to drive but hope to go for a driving test when im 17 then i may have time to go spotting

I'm 37 and more an airline industry enthusiast than a spotter. At most, I'm only a casual spotter(i.e. no radio, no binocular, no camera, not even a logbook). Don't get me wrong, I love looking @ these giant metal(Or CFRP) birds. Whenever I hv a chance, I always pick a window seat on the plane and in the airline lounge. It's just that I only do spotting when I'm on a trip which is becoming very frequent for me nowadays. I now spent more time reading about airliners/airlines than looking @ the real things.
Put it another way, I'm more familiar of which frequent flyer program offers the best deals for a particular geography than knowing about a particular aircraft registration # on the tail.
My parents told me the 1st time I flew, I was only 1.5 yrs old and of course, I hv no memory of that flight. However, I remember I hv always like airliners since I was a little kid. I could always identified exactly whether it's a L1011 or a DC-10, a 707 or a DC8, when I was only 6. I got excited everytime I looked @ airliners even if they were just scale model.

I became interested when my dad took me to work with him. He a farrier and was working on a farm near the airport that day. From that point forward my future was set and nearly ten years later i finally became a proper spotter. I remember in the two hours i was at the airport seeing many airlines that i have never logged and quite a few types that you just dont see these days. For example the Continental DC10's, Delta Tristars and of course Caledonian Airways DC10's and Tristars. Among others including BA 747's which were at Manchester that day and many others. I then spent hours watching planes and one day i seem to remember seeing two Concordes in one day at Manchester. One was AF the other BA. Apparently that only ever happened once. I started properly logging in 2003 but was not a regular at the viewing park for some time after that. My first visit to another airport other than Manchester was in 2005 with Luton being the airport since i was travelling through there. I have now officially seen nearly 6000 aircraft including those i have seen in various parts of Europe.

I'm 38 and have been spotting since I was about 8. My dad used to take me to Manchester every other weekend. If only i'd kept the Ian Allan books with all those Tridents, VC-10's, Comets and Caravelles marked off!
Had a bit of a break but now am back into it and am taking my son (who is now 5) with me to places like Heathrow, Luton and Manchester pretty regularly. He's also been to Cologne, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, Geneva, Zurich and Basel!

Hi!
I'm almost 15 now, but if one is really interested in civil aviation, I don't see why we shouldn't show that. Of course, we, the young ones, can seldomly be that good at discussions etc. as you older ones. But if we try hard, we can achieve the same level as you as we grow up. I have written about 16 pages of what I've called THE STANDARD PROCEDURES FOR FLIGHT SIMULATORS 2004 AND X, for A321, B747 and B737. I also included abnormal situations procedures for Flight Simulators. And I didn't pick it all up from real aircraft safety books etc., but I based it on my friend's and mine experience in FS. Come to think of it, one of the things I really like about this site is that the older ones don't find the younger ones incapable and everyone is treated the same. Thanks!

Gee! 16 pgs for FS? Impressive! I like FS a lot and I can only hope to become 10% as knowlegable as U in it. It's a bit embrassing to say this but the last time I played FS was 12 yrs ago on the FS4 and I had a hard time mastering any of its functions. Today's FS is full of aftermarket add-on options and the graphics/diffusions are about 700 yrs ahead of FS4.....I'm so out-dated and out of touch with contemporary FS....
