Just want to get some ideas about which ones people like the most and what are good about them. Let's do it by flight sector durations:
1) Regional hops: 2 hrs or less
2) Short range: 2-4 hrs
3) Medium range: 4-6 hrs
4) Long range: 6-10 hrs
5) Extra long range: 10-14 hrs
6) Ultra long range: 14 hrs or more

Personal experience on flight is not a must and perception is ok.

(1) Jet Airways, B737s - did a number of short hauls in India 2 years ago. Clean and new planes, friendly service, hot meals (yes, HOT meals on short haul), on time.

(4) Canadian Pacific - YVR-YYZ great service, attention to detail. Sorry I missed CP (now part of Air Canada).

(5) Canadian Pacific - YVR-HKG B747 and DC10. Great service, good food, attention to detail. Sorry I missed CP (now part of Air Canada).

This is interesting, no single current airlines was mentioned by 2 or more persons here. Also, no airlines belong in a single Global Alliance was mentioned by 2 or more people so far.

Spot planes:
I miss CP too. In its days, it's @ or near the top among N.American carriers in terms of service. However, I thought YVR-YYZ is slightly less than 6hrs(Type 3 range).

For airline brand that ceased ops now, my favourite was AN(Ansett Austraila Int'l). It has the best service in its days on the SYD-HKG route(Type 4 range) and their domestic arm wasn't bad either(Type 1-3 ranges). Their 743s were a bit old but the cabin was meticulously maintained. Very professional & friendly crew(I was admitted into the cockpit once)+great attitude+1 of the 1st airlines to serve ice-cream for dessert. Overall, it's service was superior to any CX or QF flights for Type 4 ranges back then. Most importantly, I've never heard anyone nor any media complained about Ansett Int'l services.

YVR-YYZ east bound is usually slightly over 4 hours. West bound would be close to 5 hours.

I'll put YVR-YYZ back to Type 3 range.

My type 4 range would be: SQ SIN-SYD but that was in J Class.

1) Regional hops: PG(Bangkok Airways)+JL_d(Japan Airlines Domestic)
PG: Flew @ least 6Xs on PG. All Y-class pax get hot meals+airline lounge access+extremely well maintained cabin+excellent crew attitude(Always smiling)+their main hub in USM(Koh Samui)is the most 'romantic' airport in the world.
JL_d: Flew @ least 10Xs on JL_d. Planes were a bit old but cabins are very well maintained. Excellent manners+responsiveness of cabin crew. Besides, not many airlines fly 744 or 773 on flights of only 1 to 1.5hrs!

2)+3) Short+Medium range: CX(Cathay)+NH(All Nippon)
CX: Flew @ least 30Xs on CX. CX is geared for medium-long haul ops and they apply similar/same standard for their short-haul ops. e.g. Their smallest plane is the A333 which is already the biggest/2nd biggest plane in many other airlines' fleet(Aer Lingus, QF, NW, etc.). All Y-class seats hv PTV even on the shortest flights. F+C classes lounges in their HKG(Hong Kong) hub are classy-looking & probably the biggest in Asia.
NH: Flew only 2Xs on NH. Very smart management that has long term strategic vision: 1st to order & fly 787 and 1st to launch all C-class 737NG service in Asia. Excellent cabin crew, walk around cabin frequently to observe & proactively tend to pax needs. Top notch modern & well-maintained cabin in both C+Y classes. Their new regional C-class(Club ANA Asia) has got to be 1 of the best for Type 2 range and just take a look of this beauty: http://intsvc.aspwb.com/contents/C/index2_e.html

4)+5) Long+Extra long range: JL_i(Japan Airlines Int'l)+SQ(Singapore)
JL_i: Flew @ least 10Xs on JL_i. Consistently excellent crew+food+modern seat design(With AVOD) across all 3 classes. Comprehensive regional+long haul network. Great looking & not just flat but nearly horizontal new C-class seat(Shell-flat seat). New F+C class lounges in their NRT(Narita) hub is an interior design masterpiece: http://www.jal.co.jp/en/narita-t2/info/lounge/
SQ: Flew only 2Xs on SQ long time ago but comments apply to today's SQ std. Simply the most luxurious /biggest /advanced F+C classes available today. Legendary cabin crew service is still top-notch all these yrs. The youngest long-haul fleet in the world, period(Almost all SQ planes fly no more than 12yrs before replacement). Comprehensive route network. Consistently successful management that has long-term vision+excellent mkting: 1st to fly A380. Undisputed quality leader globally

6) Ultra long range: AC(Air Canada)+EK(Emirates)
Never flew on such long flight.
AC: The only N.American carrier with a C-class that is on-par with or better than the best & most advanced fm Asia Pacific or Europe. Each C-class(ExecutiveFirst) seat in their 777 fleet is a full-cubicule/semi-suite that converts into a fully horizontal bed.
EK: If U don't believe EK(Not SQ,CX,BA nor VS) is setting THE STANDARD for F-class ultra-long haul travel, just take a look @ this:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1124655&WxsIERv=Nveohf%20N340-541&Wm=0&WdsYXMg=Rzvengrf&QtODMg=Va%20Syvtug&ERDLTkt=Vagreangvbany%20Nvefcnpr&ktODMp=Frcgrzore%2023%2C%202006&BP=0&WNEb25u=Fnz%20Puhv&xsIERvdWdsY=N6-RET&MgTUQtODMgKE=Nve%20Yvsr.%20Qvavat%20vafvqr%20bs%20gur%20Rzvengrf%20Svefg%20Pynff%20Fxlfhvgr%20pnova%20ng%20SY410%20npebff%20gur%20Gnfzna%20Frn.%20%5BAvxba%20Q2k%2C%20Avxxbe%2010.5zz%20Svfurlr%5D&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=216991&NEb25uZWxs=2006-10-15&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=608&static=yes&width=1000&height=678&sok=JURER%20%20%28nveyvar%20YVXR%20%27Rzvengrf%25%27%20NAQ%20nveyvar%20ABG%20YVXR%20%27%25Havgrq%25%27%20NAQ%20nveyvar%20ABG%20YVXR%20%27%25Qhonv%25%27%20BE%20nveyvar%20YVXR%20%27Hagvgyrq%20%28Rzvengrf%29%25%27%29%20%20BEQRE%20OL%20cubgb_vq%20QRFP&photo_nr=10&prev_id=1127229&next_id=1119477&tbl=CABIN

A fully private suite with its own doors. No other airlines offer this kind of ultimate privacy+luxury. What can I say? A personal palace in the sky?

My favorites airlines:

A) Regional: Air Canada Jazz, PHL-YYZ, CRJ200ER, C-GUJA, C-FIJA, good inflight service for less than 2 hours, newspapers, hot meal, attention to detail;

B) Short Range 2-4hrs: Frontier Airlines, PHL-DEN, A318/319, N807FR, N940FR, N931FR, attention to detail, hot meal, newspapers, Individual LCD monitor for cable tv and movies (F9 is my favorite airline of all, because its tails have a whole different animal decal applied as motive, and i'm ramp agent for this airline);

C) Medium Range 4-6hrs: Air Canada, YYZ-YVR, registration aircraft on Werkur737 Air Canada flightlog, B767-300, attention to detail, hot meal, newspapers, some movies;

D) Long Range 6-10hrs: Lufthansa, PHL-FRA, registration aircraft on Werkur737 Lufthansa flightlog, B747-400 (today changed for A340-300), attention to detail, hot meal, newspapers, individual LCD monitor for movies, necessaire with brush teeth, tooth paste and more;

E) Extra Long Range 10-14hrs: Lufthansa, FRA-HKG, registration aircraft on Werkur737 Lufthansa flightlog, B747-400, same as PHL-FRA inflight service;

F) Ultra Long Range 14 hrs or more: never flown on more than 14hrs, but i think is Singapore A345 SIN-LAX.

All ranges above, with exception for Ultra Long Range, are routes i've flown.
If i have to choose only one airline of all, my choice is F9 (Frontier Airlines), the best inflight service in a A318 and A319 of whole world absolutely. Other reason, my job is ramp agent for F9, so is my best, and for flights either.

Hot meal on AC ?? Only on international flights mate! Not in domestic or North America flight. AC sells the same hot sanwiches in flight every day. If you fly as much AC domestic (90,000+ miles) as I do, you are sick of their sandwiches.

I log most AC miles on YVR-YYZ, YVR-YUL and YVR-HKG. I always eat a full meal at the airport before I get on those long flights. Besides, at YUL, Moe's Restaurant in the domestic departure past security has the second best Montreal smoke meat. The best Montreal smoke meat is downtown at Swartz.

Junior Diniz:
Unfortunately, the old Varig went under due to I guess poor management. Do U know what happened to their fleet? Taken over by other Brazilian carriers? I remembered I read fm somewhere last yr re the bankrupcy of Varig that some of their 772ERs were repossessed by creditors and held in JFK and other airports @ 1 point....

I tend to find that Airlines on the same route offer a similar service unless you fly a budget airline and then you can only judge the flying and not the service. I am fortunate to be able to fly on a number of routes as a passenger and with a veriety of airlines so here we go;

1> Loganair, Aer Arann, FlyBE, Eastern, BMI.

2> British Airways, BMI, Aer Lingus, KLM

3> British Airways, BMI,

4> British Airways, Delta, Air Canada

5> British Airways, Singapore,

6> British Airways, Qantas, Singapore

I'v managed to get BA into every sector and rightly so in my opinion. They are good and you'll never know if you never go.

I agree BA has been pretty competitive against other top carriers in their inflight products. I still remember they were the 1st to introduce the revolutionary F-class semi-suite/full cubicle 10 yrs ago.

On many routes, especially transatlantic, I agree inflight products+services are pretty similar across carriers. However, there're still significant diff between airlines in other mkts. e.g. UA/AA simply hv signifcantly older seat design, worse services than NH/JL in C and Y classes on routes between Japan and the U.S. even though they belong to the same respective global alliances and fares are similar. Between SYD and LAX, nearly everyone always prefer QF over UA due to much more advanced IFE+seats across all classes. Finally, take a look @ the clear diff of the current C-class seats fm SQ, UA and AA:

http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/content/exp/new/businessclass/seatfeatures.jsp
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1935,00.html
http://www.aa.com/content/travelInformation/duringFlight/businessClassCabin.jhtml

Can U believe the UA/AA seats are classified & sold as the same class of service(C) as SQ? Even the new UA/AA C-class seats to be introduced soon are inferior to SQ's and can only match others' seats implemented a lot earlier. This SQ C-class standard is actually slightly beyond the F-class standards on almost all top carriers in the world except may be EK and Qatar. A straight/non-herring bone(Non-angled) 1-2-1 seat layout is simply unheard of for C-class.

Generally, I find U.S. carriers to be consistently remain at least 1-2 generatons behind the top Euro and Asian airlines in terms of inflight products+services.
